20V is it worth the change?
I currently have a 4age running ITB's, but will probably need to change the engine, very smokey. Is it worth the change to the 20v. I have read a few things that say they don't make the power quoted. Has anyone dyno'd one standard to actually see.
Is there much work converting to RWD. I don't mind the electrics etc, I have a stand alone ECU. Cheers Ivan 1972 MG Midget - AE86 Engine, Ford Anglia Axle - Escort LSD - Live the Dream!!1 |

20V is it worth the change?
Hi byd1380,
The toyota black top 20v engine is rated @165 BHP on japanese fuel which is a 100 RON+ in Japan. When they are dynoed over here in Ireland they tend to make 145BHP thus loosing 15 BHP through lack of octane and transmission loss. However you are still up 15 BHP on a standard 4age 16 valve and it's a much fresher engine.I am currently building one at the moment for my company down in Southern Ireland.I can give you a list of the bits you need and can also source them for you if interested I met a guy in Japan when i was there in Jan 07 on a track day at Fuji circuit who had a AE86 trueno with a black top 20v in his car and all i can say was that it was an amazing car to go with a 10,000 rev limit....pretty sweet and sounded awesome as well. 20V is it worth the change?
I think it's well worth it, I've seen a 20V with nothing but 304 cams, a proper N2 race manifold, a well mapped Freedom ECU and oil cooler rev all day long at 10000 rpm and it was very quick too (Very, very stripped out car though!). I'd estimate around 180 real bhp from that one.
We're just completing a conversion ourselves, and it's a lot better than the standard engine it had before. Still completing the mapping just now, but I expect around a real 175 bhp on Jap fuel... Black tops are the easiest way to get a power and good weight distribution, but you definitely need some good mapping. Not that quick at all on the standard AE111 ECU's. VISIT OUR NEW WEBSITES!!!! 20V is it worth the change?
I am really not sure what to do. I currently have the engine in a 1972 MG Midget, with altenator on wrong side etc. It currently runs ITB's with a stand alone ECU. I have a half home made manifold, it from a OBX header from a FWD car. I am just looking for something pretty staright forward to swap. I don't mind the electrics etc.
Is the 20valve taller with it's head, it there much to trigger the TVIS etc. Ivan My current setup makes 130bhp and revs past 8K, just very smokey, i would think it can make more on new manifold. so if I'm going to only get 10-15bhp, is it worth it? 1972 MG Midget - AE86 Engine, Ford Anglia Axle - Escort LSD - Live the Dream!!1 |

20V is it worth the change?
Didn't realise it's only a midget, so it already very lightweight and will go well with a 16V anyways. Maybe just get a decent used 4AGE and put it in, sorted! - Conrad on here, has a decent 4AGE for sale!

20V is it worth the change?
I say no. I had a ST 20V ina stripped AE86 and it ran head to head ina second gear pull with my full interior Small Port. Plus the parts for 16V are more readily available, and the tuning can be as far as your dreams can take you. Think Neverending Story.
