4age small port engine build
Starting a thread on my 4age engine build as a result of the guidance on my bigport to small port install topic.
The aim is to build up a late spec 16v engine but using early internals. Late hardware No T-VIS / small port head and fuel rail 7 rib block with oil squirters. Matching (standard) 10.3 cr pistons. Early hardware Worked early con rods (to match 20mm pin dia on late piston) Crank (matching 40mm big end dia) Stock 240° cams Injectors Will post more on this shortly, but for the time being i have taken some pictures of the head i have just bought: 4age small port head pics You may be able to see one or two areas i am a little concerned with. It was purchased as a reconditioned item and 'untested'. From my untrained eye there is no terminal damage and it is not warped. Welcome your comments all! PLAY.FIDDLE>LEARN |

Thanks i believe that it has been aqua blasted.
No cam bearing caps.....cue aeu86 community support! I guess having it line honed with some new caps is the answer. PLAY.FIDDLE>LEARN |

1) without cam caps sucks..... not easy replacing them, can be costly to line bore....
1a) how is this reconditioned... it looks clean, but I see nothing that speaks to any reconditioning 2) the bashed corner at the back of the head... will need to be machined flat. The head looks to be original(uncut), measure the thickness it should be around 115.9mm to 116mm thick. 3) the close up view of the exhaust seats shows some pitting, recommend 3 angle. oldeskewltoy Wrote:1) without cam caps sucks..... not easy replacing them, can be costly to line bore.... That thickness measurement is very useful when buying used heads. Is there a specific place to measure this on the head and are both types of 16v heads the same measurement ? An analogue brain in a digital World |

The race shop near me told me the measurement - 4.563" , or 115.9002mm. I've measured a few heads so far... the thickest was 116.2, but that head was NOT clean, and so gasket residue likely was the difference. Finally, I've had a couple of chats with a few members about this... the "accepted" logic was that Toyota made them to a set measurement in mm... so the thought was 116.0000. The difference between 115.9 and 116 as measured in SAE scale is 4.563" to 4.567". 4 thousandths is minimal when it comes to a head cut, so either 115.9, or 116 is the thickness of an uncut head. Where to measure.... I measure at the front of the head, close the intake camshaft front cam cap. It should measure the same from anywhere on the top gasket surface to the mounting surface. Knowing if a head has been cut, potential golden info!
Depending on price and how easily i can have a line bore. I'll see how far i can get with this head, otherwise its back to the drawing board. Hunting for small port head/long block is proving difficult. Shame as i purchased the non TVIS inlet recently also. Cheers guys. PLAY.FIDDLE>LEARN |
