AE86 Models and types ( zenki / kouki )
There are plenty more variations if you would take a look in japan. The sr5 btw has an ae86 chassis code, whilst the US gts has an AE88 chassis code. The rear AE85 has a smaller engine than the 4a if I'm not mistaken.

since the modelcode is AE85, there has to be an "A" engine in it.

Maybe the 3A Tercel engine?

According to the Club4AG comparison chart it is indeed the 3A-U engine

The SR5 (US) has a 4AC engine and the Autralian has a 3A...

Correct...zenki lsds have 22 or 23 spline axles while the kouki has 2 extra splines. The only other differences are cosmetic ie: kouki version has wrap around park lights on the bumper while zenki is flat faced...whitline & redline tailghts etc etc. Afaik the drive shafts and panel work are the same but my knowledge only extends to the AUS & JDM versions

fwiw the australian delivered ae86 known as the "Toyota Sprinter" came with 4ac engine & s series rear end (drum)...very much the downscaled version of the JDM release (basically an ae85 without the 3au)

The JDM versions also have gtv, gtz & gt apex. Most of the differences are cosmetic

Wrong. the US GTS AND SR5 BOTH share the chasis code AE86 (they're EXACTLY the same structurally. its the VIN that starts differently on each model (SR5 starts JT2AE86, whilst GTS starts JT2AE8Cool

Hence why SR5 to GTS conversions are so popular, because they're exactly the same.. and if you plan on a motor swap anyway.. why not start off with a 300 dollar SR5, as opposed to a 3000 dollar GTS?

Actually, the GTZ was an option that came up in 1988, with the introduction of the AE92. (Z = Supercharged... was there a factory SC'd AE86? no.)
