Anyone experienced with LSD diffs?
My LSD only works in one direction (left), Í want to rebuild it some day but it seems to be a slightly difficult task (the shimming/adjustment of the LSD). Has anyone done this before? What do the parts cost from toyota?
I know T3 offers beefier rebuild kits on their website, but I dont know if they have those in stock since it was mentioned on club4ag that they didnt. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

I'm still not sure what to do but I am in favor of taking my spare axle appart and rebuilding the LSD in that one and then place that one in my car. For me this will be a first timer aswell. I found a page on club4ag the other day, I think i posted it in another thread, about rebuiling the LSD. It basically said the difficult part was removing and installing the LSD from the axle, the rebuild was pretty straight forward (so the writer said). Anyways, I'm thinking, lets buy 2 rebuild kits, one for you, one for me, head out to my place, take the axle appart together, rebuild that LSD and if we succeed, rebuild your LSD and put them back into our cars. 2 heads know more then one Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

I dont mind helping you with your rebuild, but dont have the money to buy a kit myself just yet.

Good to know, that really is the danger when you place rebuild instructions on the web, if they are not complete or wrong, you can mess up someone else's car indirectly
I am not in any hurry myself, still waiting for all the other parts I dont even know if the LSD in my spare axle needs rebuilding, the axle is still in my ford, its to heavy to lift by myself and carry it to my shed (not to mention I still need to clean my shed up and make room for it I may just swap the LSD between the axle and my car and see if its good first. Then rebuild my old LSD, do another swap, and sell the spare axle to whomever needs it But I have no idea how much work swapping out an LSD is... Gabriel's article is pretty good, he doesn't write about shimming the LSD since the rebuild kit he supplies has thicker plates which have the effect of adding shims for more aggressive lock.
$150 USD is a lot less than what you'd pay for an OEM Toyota rebuild kit and the clutches will bite harder and last longer. Well worth doing. Email Gabe and ask what's in stock and if they're out, he can email you when there's more in. Zenki and Kouki were available last time I checked. As for getting the shafts out.... A slide hammer is the cleanest way or get a scrap steel wheel rim with a 4x114.3 PCD eg RWD Toyotas like old Celicas, Model F's, TownAce etc etc (I use a Nissan Bluebird rim). Remove brakes and remove the shaft retaining bolts on the axle housing. Then put the disc back on and bolt the steelie onto the shaft. Make sure the car is very secure on axle stands and then whack the wheel rim from the inside with a sledge hammer. Turn the wheel and whack alternate sides and the shaft will eventually slide out. Some axles are harder than others, though the longer it's been in, the harder it is normally. From here it's easy. Super cheap slide-hammer substitute. I wouldn't recommend alloy wheels as they may crack. Definately not magnesium wheels cos they will explode!! :wink: |

Well, if I'm going to rebuild the ol thing anyway, I was going to use the T3 set anyway (improvement over stock for a good price). Do you by any chance know what setting slack and backlash means? I think it has something to do with the ring&pinion gears but I'm not very sure.

This takes a good few Hrs and you need some engineerings blue to see how the mesh is. Check hachilife.com, they have the S/M online which shows you how to set it up. I just did mine and belive me, setting it up is a bitch! If you are not confident with it take it to a LSD specialist |

Well I dont know any LSD specialist....and if I did I probably couldnt afford his services. That leaves me with the hard way to do it...finding out for myself (well...at least I prolly get to practice on mux's diff first). I prefer learning to do stuff myself anyway. There are few things I wouldnt fiddle around with myself on my car, and the main one is bodywork.
