Funny..I think the 4AGE in stock trim really lets the AE86 down..high redline, but no rush to redline..would have much preffered the CRX D-series engine that just gets better and better as you approach the revlimit. 4AGE is a bit dull in comparison. I "think" that a mild cam in an otherwise stock 4AGE would really wake it up and improve the driving experience tenfold.
MX5 1.6 is just as bad, but has more lowrange torque then 4AGE, making for a little more fun ride in daily life/traffic. Engine lets you down when revved to its limit, but grip levels compensate a lot (i've seen up to 1.5G in a mildly modded MX5). 318is is to heavy in comparison..maybe a 320is would be better, but I have heard a forum member that owned one also complain about dull engine reactions..weird.
