Gearbox "problems"
I've got some gearbox problems after changing the oil this weekend. It's soooo hard to change the gears when the oil is cold. This morning I left home in second gear because I coudnt shift up from first to second. After 2 corners it wasn't a problem anymore, but shifting back was still no option. After 5-8 km's I was finally able to put it from 4th to 3th and 3th to 2nd. With the old oil it was also harder to shift when cold then warmed up but never like this!
So please help: Old oil: ???? New oil: GL5 80W-90 Ive heared from Mux its not good to use GL5 for the synchro's, but could this also be the cause of the bad shifting? Will change it again this weekend if it's nessesary, but what kind of oil would you use? (yea i know this question been on the forum alot...) 5/2018 BMW F22 Coupe 1/1985 Toyota AE86 Levin Coupe |

dj you must use GL4 oil in the gearbox.

And don't use a GL4-5, those will also damage you're synchro's.
Just a pure GL4, and take 75W90, that will shift better when cold. |

Too bad for the effort this weekend, but dont want to damage my gearbox, so next weekend it will be changed allready Ill put in the GL4 75W90 5/2018 BMW F22 Coupe 1/1985 Toyota AE86 Levin Coupe |

I use REDLINE SAE 75W90 API GL5+ Hypoid Gear Oil and have no problems when they are warmed up ...
Same i am going to use for the LSD after re-newing it! AE86 FANATIC!!! |

Don't use GL5, after a year the synchro's will be damaged and you're car wil have downshift problems.

Uhh, good post. And good to read it in time.
I changed all the fluids (engine, gearbox, lsd, brakes) about 500km ago. And for the gearbox i used gl-5, so i change it this afternoon to gl-4. One question: could the wrong oil cause some noise from the gearbox? I changed the bushings at the same time (prothane bushings). And now i have vibracy in all five gears, except the 4. Mostly during engine brake. |

Mostly during engine brake. I think its because of the bushings. You feel much more vribration in your car when youve mounted them. In fact many cars must use GL4 in gearboxes but I never heard of damage using GL5. The GL5 contains sulfuric component - improving longevity of gearbox/diff components, but agressive to copper alloys (old style synchros - like in T50).

I have Gl4-5 (some hybrid) for more then a year in my gearbox and almost all synchro's are gone. I hoped the GL4-5 wasn't that agressive, but now i have learned to double clutch and the g-box was allready dying, so it's not that bad
