30-50mph times
Anyone interested in posting 30-50mph times ?
A bit of fun but could also be quite interesting. I suggest 4 runs, 2 in each direction in 4th gear as this should be a direct ratio. What do you all think ? An analogue brain in a digital World |

waste of time ? no offense but the ae86 is not a drag car. Besides with engine swaps its not really a measurement anymore.
Interesting is mods and WHP compared to weight. 30-50 times in one gear are an excellent way of comparing different engine set ups. I for one would like to know the times for a stock engine versus one with cams etc. I agree that weight is an issue though. An analogue brain in a digital World |

That would be a good idea to a degree, as this gives a good clue about the pull of the engine.. But the point robo was refering to, i think, was that resoults wouldnt be comparable. Many cars are stripped and many have changed gearing/final drive and even the tire size/diameter.. So you cant really compare engines in such conditions. but for the rest of us who have mostly stock running gear/weight that could be cool. When i get my car up and running i'll make the measurements.

Hi, some suggestions:
- Change the 4th gear demand to any gear that's quickest. - State which 30-50 time you mean. I would say constant speed of 30mph/50kph and then accelerating and timing untill 50mph/80kph. - Maybe change 30-50 to 50-75mph (80-120kph) takes more time and as such is easier to safely measure. 30-50 takes about 2 seconds in some cars. @ Robo: Lennert this is an excellent way of comparing setups. Wheel-horsepower is a terrible measure to compare engines since every dyno produces different numbers. Dutch dyno's in particular spit 10-20 more WHP then comparable dyno's in the world. This would be a nice oportunity to prove that we also have the quickest stock engines in the world (a stock 170hp blacktop comes to mind as well as a 20 year old stock bluetop spitting out 130hp). Acceleration is what matters in the real world, no matter what a dyno says. So it will be nice if we can see how much you can compensate through weight reduction and gearing and just how important HP really is for performance. 50-75 is the most important speedrange on a track..its the "dragrace" from one corner exit to the next entry. No harm in doing a series of timings
The stipulation for 4th gear was that it would be one less variable to account for. Most of us modify different parts of the car to make it faster, not just the engine and as NoHachi states, acceleration is what matters no matter how you achieve it and we may get some surprising results. Could a relatively stock 16v engine with a light shell be as fast as a 20v in a heavy car ? So: 30-50 quickest gear 30-50 4th gear 50-75 quickest gear(s) ? Stating also wheel diameter 13" 15" etc and diff. ratio if known ?? Actually thinking about it I think the diff ratio comparison would be good, sometimes a lower ratio feels faster but in reality, isn't An analogue brain in a digital World |

I have some figures for an Opel Kadet GTE (rwd)
142 flywheel hp 4.75 cwp 185/70/13 tyres 995 kg 30-50 2nd gear 3.1 seconds 30-50 5th gear 5.8 seconds What is the relevance ? Well it shows how the torque of a 2 litre engine really helps acceleration, I would expect a similar weight AE86 with similar power to compete in 2nd gear but 5th gear 30-50 in 5.8 seconds ?
