Hello there out a rather small country called: Holland (NL)
Hello everybody,
I am Rolph, 24, fulltime student and recreational drifter... Recently I was able to acquire a rather rust AE86 Levin Coupe... Though she is without engine and without driveable suspension... I plan to do a lot of things with her... However I don't know how long it'll take me... I really want to do this one right... The goal is a "street legal" 86 I'll attempt to get to a power to weight ratio of 0.33 This would result is a approximate weight of 850 kg With a power level of 280 HP. Because a lot of parts are rather hard to come by over here I'll be gutting her and make a lot of other, different brand, things fit... I'll try to post photo's as soon as I get going... First thing to get now is a new welder... The one already in my possession is not sufficient... Cheers, PS: If I come across problems I'll be asking, or looking for parts... some are already on my list.. like headlights... |

Hello,
most parts aren't that difficult to find , it just depends on how much you're willing to spend on them . |

Hello there out a rather small country called: Holland (NL)
Body work is indeed first on my list...
The pictures I have now... are less than worthless... Yes, the parts seem to be reasonably hard to find... if you compare it to a S13 for example... that or... I don't know where to find them yet... If the latter option is true, please do inform me about where I can find certain parts... like OEM lighting, be it RHD or LHD lighting dashboard this needs to be LHD heater (interior) this needs to be LHD that kind of stuff... willing to pay... well that 'll depend on how many times I'll be wrecking it |

Where in Rotterdam are you? Do you have your own workplace where you will do this stuff?
Funny that we'll have two CA86's in Rotterdam, a coupe and a hatchback I can tell you now though that you won't be reaching your power to weight goal. Power is easy from the engine, but needs more work from the 86 (axles, brakes!) Weight wise.. ours is stripped, has 4kg wheels (most of the mega offset stuff you see is double that) and still came in at 1040kg. All the turbo stuff adds up pretty quick. There might be another 50kg in lightweight bodyparts, but getting below 900kg will be a challenge. Impossible if you plan on installing parts like the heater matrix. Don't believe everything you read on the internet unless you see a photograph of the numbers on the scale. Still even with 250hp and 1040kg they can be pretty entertaining. ;-) A wheel to steer the front of the car A pedal to steer the rear |

It is a goal...
However... If it were to happen that I wouldn't be able to attain that goal... no harm done I probably won't be using AE86 suspenion (unsprung weight and adjustability blablabla) As you've mentioned, NoHachi, 900-1000kg is still very entertaining. And power is relatively easy to come by, weight is hard to shed (depending on approach that is and how much you want to demolish the structural integrity of the entity) I will not only do a practical approach on the vehicle, but I'll be calculating a lot of things aswell like steering behavior, brake balance, load transfers, etc. @ NoHachi: I'm based in a small village near Hellevoetsluis. I've got a small shed (no doors, just a roof) to do my work... At this precise moment I'm at "Heijplaat" RDM Campus... Where are you located? Delft, is that where you do your work as well??? |

I'm in Delft/Rotterdam, depending on the time.
Will be interesting to see how your calcs end up with the S13 stuff. Some have had a stab at them and it wasn't pretty. No problem for drifting though (nothing really is to be honest). If I were you I'd take a look at escort rwd stuff, its a better match and lots of stuff available cheap. If you want grip over looks, then ford focus type hubs are the ticket (decoupled strut inclination and scrubradius geometry). On the rear ford escort stuff is pretty close too and on escorts still outperforms diy IRS conversions( google the mcrea brothers for an interesting read). Hello there out a rather small country called: Holland (NL)
I understand the pros and cons of a live axle vs IRS...
However, if I set cheap vs expensive and long vs short(er) apart... I'd rather spend an extra year "developing" and messing about than "just" fix it and ride... The option of adjustability appeals to me very much... But this, I need to have on paper together with the right, corresponding, measurements, weights, and characteristics (steering and handling) due to it all... The following might sound a little weird, but I need to know parts are readily available if I were to wreck something... instead of a month or two of delivery times and other hardships... In short, there are a lot of things to look at, to work out and to determine. another little thing (issue)... however it's just hearsay... is the torquecapacity of the halfshafts in relation to the, to be produced, enginepower. So far it's a goal, this doesn't cancel the option of me reverting my idea and keeping the existing axle in place... I'm still in the startup phase of this project... Ideas and suggestions are always welcome... @ NoHachi: what did you mean by "stab"? |
