The thing circled in the second picture is unknown to me. Since your from the US, I'd stake my money on it being some emissions-related crap (charcoal/evap canister?).
By the way, the TVIS solenoid is located under the inlet manifold.. so that is most definately not it. Dunno what the solenoid in the top picture is for, but if yours doesnt have it, you'd best make sure that whatever it's supposed to be connected to is blocked off to avoid vacuum leaks as NoHachi already said.
