LSD whinning
Mine was ok until the trackday... Now it whines a bit from 2500 rpm to 3000 rpm (in 5th gear) and then the noise becomes almost unnoticeable.
Keeping the AE86 alive! |

LSD whinning
Kind of an interesting topic Most gear noise is due to the teeth
"slapping" together as they come into mesh. So this noise will follow the speed of the vehicle... become higher in pitch the faster you go. Gear mesh noise is greatly influenced by the setup of the gears. Traditionally, these are designed to have an eliptical contact patch centred halfway up the tooth, and biased towards the toe of the tooth during setup. Under load, the contact patch will enlarge and move towards the centre of the tooth width. A contact patch that is not centred will result in high tooth pressures, edge contact, vibration and noise !! It is also very important to use a high quality oil specifically formulated for differential use. And it is also worth remembering that the harder your suspension bushings are, the more noise they will transmit into the car interior. The same metal box you painstakingly stripped of all sound insulating materials to save weight :-D Cheers... jondee86 |
