Quote:but an environmental group is targeting the company anyway, saying the average fuel economy of Toyota vehicles is worse than it was 20 years ago.

hehe, of course toyota was making great engines 20 years ago.

Exactly. It's just insane: engines itself are cleaner, but people want more powerful cars and buy bigger engines.

WTF, too many tree hugging hippys in this world, one minute they want bullshit cars with safe crumple zones, airbags ect. which add hunderds of kg's to a car, then choke them to death with catalytic converters, then wonder why mpg goes down. Idiots

we need bigger engines to move the extra weight that all the cars have standard nowadays.Like airco,8 airbags, abs, all kind of computer systems, and all those steel heavy brackets and braces in doors for safety issues.

That makes a corolla 1.6 weigh around 1150 kg.

And that corolla still uses the same technology as the 4age back then.so now you can get a corolla with 1.8 16v compressor, just like you said banpei

Real men race downhill

Assholes,

The reason that the cars are less fuel efficient has nothing to do with the engines getting worse, it has to do with the cars being 2ce as heavy as they were because we now need 15 airbags, reinforced shells, super safetly bumpers, more heavy but environmentally safe building materials and you name it.

I bet that if you do the same check for every car manufacturers the only ones coming out winning are the americans because they didn't know what fuel economy was 20 years ago!

Greetz,

Moved down under, no more hachi Sad

I think this might not apply to europe in the same way it does for the US. If you look at footage of ordinary traffic in regular US towns it's like 80% SUV's driving on the roads over there. What we call middle-sized cars over here are compacts over there. So it's really no surprise that the fuel consumption is only getting worse as the popularity of big ridiculous cars increases.

Yep. But people start buying SUVs here as well, and it's not just filthy rich people anymore: you can buy a Landwind for the price of the cheapest Corolla. Big Grin
It is only a matter of time before our roads are clogged up as well with those cars. Undecided

And ofcourse everyone drives cars as safe as a Volvo of the 80s (except for the landwind), along with the fuel consumption of those cars. Tongue

If everyone start buying those chinese landwinds the problem will soon sort itself out.. But I doubt many people will want one after seeing those safety test images..
