let your hands of zink spray! it has to big particles of zink in it. you need a very rough surface if you do not want to loose it! i have used it once and never again. i could peel it of with my fingernails... |

I think that is how martijn feels about it aswell. Sink is VERY nice if you can galvanise it on, not spray it on... Eventually the bits in the rear will be repainted when we spray the entire car anyways. Plex: Rust sucks, its hard to get rid off, even when you weld new bits of steal in, the welding lines themselves become the weakest point and rust easiest. Rust starts the second air rushes in and since there are always a few seconds between the sanding and spraying the primer on. You can use rust preventive paints or etching primers, but after a few years rust always comes back. Only way to make sure rust never comes back is to sandblast the car, dip it in acid and galvanise the body after fixing all the rusted bits. Still my car has very little rust so far. The axle looks okay, why didnt you just have it sandblasted? Prolly to expensive eh..
Anyway, paint that thing black with a good solid glossy paint. Shiny stuff is always nice to look at, and dirt doesnt stick to it as bad. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Now you have to clean the entire rear axle you could do that to remove any small pieces

Mux, did you just weld a patch over the hole or did you cut out the exact dimensions of the patch first?
Usually when you let two pieces of sheetmetal overlap, then you create a rustmagnet. Its really hard to get any primer inbetween, but water gets sucked in via the capilary effect. Your best shot in those cases is to use a weldable primer before actually welding the pieces together. Dipping the car in a galvinising tank is also difficult. I meant to do this to a mini shell, but it seams its impossible to do without distorting the car. The heat change is just to much and different partys of the car expand in different rates. No hachi, I didn't see martijn do the last bit, was busy changing the oil myself asfar as I know he made the patch to form first, then cut out where it was supposed to go and then welded the bit in. It is slightly overlapped at the ends. Its a real difficult spot to get something cut in exact to size. It should stay good for atleast a couple of years.
As for galvinising, hmm interesting that it heats up so much, I though it was purely electrical and heat would not be a problem. Maybe I am mixing up different techniques now Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

could be me thats mistaken....
I meant zinc dipping, like they do in big metal shops and shipyards. They had a bath at my fathers workplace so I investigated the possibility. There is an other option though, called moffelen in Dutch. I believe it has something to do with spraying heated zinc particles onto the surface...don't remember exactly though..have a car now that doesn;t rust. NoHachi, yeah they do that at powdercoating places. I think you still need to bake your car to get the paint to adhere well enough. Also it doesn't get into all the little holes and stuff so for a car I'm not sure if its a good thing.
The technique I ment was where you put the chassis in a bath of acid and put and anode on it or kathode, can't remember. That desolves all the junk and microscopic rust, then put the chassis in another acid bath but now with reversed current and a bit of zink or other non corroding metal in it, electrolitic conversion will put a small layer of that metal on your car completely insulating the metal. The metal is bonded to the chassis molecularly, nothing beats that. There is only 1 way the car can now rust and thats by scratching this top layer off and thats not as easy as it sounds. I read about a guy who actually dipped his MG chassis like this privately, constructing such a bath in a shed. Quicky update, photos will be posted here soon.
Okay did ALOT of work today. Welded a new bit into the driver side door. Turned out the rust there was alot less worse then we had expected. We welded a bit of a focus door in We couldn't finish it completely though. Still need a little bit of filler to mold the shape. I must say to me it looks great but martijn isn't happy yet. We also found out that the passenger side door has a slight dent that we need to take out, will do that next time. All the filling and sanding work on the fiberglas body parts is also as good as finished and the repair work on my passenger side rear wheel well is also finished. Next tuesday we hope to get the dent out of the passenger side door and do the last bit of work on the driver side door. With luck the saterday following that the car will finally be primed. It seems that my car will be at the automaxx show in primer coat, not totally what I wanted but it should still look pretty damn cool!
