By the way, some cars have multiple O2 or EGT sensors (dont remember which). One before and one after the cat. The ecu uses the difference between the two signals to operate the cat more efficiently I think. I read somewhere that it could behave differently when there is no cat and no or little difference between the 2 signals.

As I said, if the AEM (which is indeed made by gems) comes with a wiring loom (not sure for the AE86), then installation is a matter of hours. If it doesn't come with a loom, then you could build one yourself, which is quite a hassle...you don't need new sensors though, unlike you do with some ECU's (eg. DTA).
The best reason to get one is because it plugs staright in, no need to re wire! If there was a Power FC available for my car then I would get that instead, but there isn't! Smile
And correct me if I am wrong but you should be able to tell what the basic parameters are not matter what language it is in! Smile

Sorry I've not added to this thread for a while.

Rikard, moto-po is one of the folks on the club4ag forums that runs freedom engine management. I believe he is based in the US of A.

Rikard you seem determined to use the Freedom ecu. I just wanted to give you some insights of the drawbacks on using such a japanese system. I couldn't imagine it, hell the english systems are complicated enough. (If you want to know what the" basic parameters" you mentioned entail, go to the AEM website and download the free software. Try and imagine it al in Japanese, maybe you'll understand me better. ).

I've tuned such systems before (not japanese though), so if you decide to go forward with this and run into problems just give a shout. I'll try and help you out as best as I can.

Thanks for the advice. I have worked with Gems before and have also been involved with numorous other systems such as APEXi Power FC and a system we use here at Toyota ( Big Grin ) so know a little bit about maping etc. I also have a lot of resources available including Japaneese coleauges which will be happy to help me out Big Grin

Thanks Big Grin By the way, have not been able to speak to one of the guys in Japan this week because I had a tremendous work load, will speak to him next week and see if I can get some more info for you regarding the ECU Thumbs up! Thumbs up!

I am a software developer so I roughly know what would be required to port but they dont seem interested in my helping them. I got a very short reply of 'japanese only' and that was it. I've tried again and not heard back from them which is a shame. I think there is a market for Freedom outside of japan - seems like a good ECU.

I don't have the interface cable either which is a shame Sad

If you do go with one it would be useful to get an extra software disk and interface cable and I will buy them from you.

a friend of mine grew up in japan. i will ask him if you have something to translate Wink

Also, do you have a copy of the E mail from Freedom, I can get someone in the office to translate for you want?

The email simply said 'japanese only'

I can only assume they are the only english words they know.

Looks good - just need to get some gasket sealant tomorrow before fitting the shifter. Also have to figure out where the tow eye is should fit. It supposedly fits onto existing bolts that support the front bumper. Hope I don't have to cut a hole in it Huh
