Depends on what you call "for free". It means I get to use a bit of carbon weave of one of the old rolls we have lying about that has been replaced by some new state of the art stuff. Other then that, all we need is some resin and an afternoon in the autoclave.
This friend of mine is doing his carbon mini interior next weekend, so I will help out and insert some of my own stuff as I go along. Still an ordinary metal one would save me a lot of headaches.. As far as pics go..what do you want to see...its just the ordinary stuff going on. Car will remain to look rediculous untill I replace the stock rims. Nohachi,
Common man, you of all people should be able to appreciate pictures of a car in progress of being restored? You write with such enthousiasm of how they are welding new bits into your car, I want to see how well they are doing it How does this work with the carbon stuff, do you have something that allows you to copy something or so? Well doing carbon bits is mucho difficult:
First we sand down the original piece, then we tape it in with smooth stickytape (covers up the holes and beats the hell out of going the bondo route) and apply loosening compound then we do a hand layup with carbonweavemats and a brush with resin. After this has hardened out, it can be used as a mold for the vacuum bag injection process. So basically any idiot can do it, but only some really do. The trick is the vacuum bag and having a large enough autoclave..not many people have a university with carbon lab in their backgarden. Its still the wrong material used in the wrong location though. Ideally you would make this piece out of ABS plastic or something else that is pretty resistant to being bombarded with stones, but we don't have that over here and after all it wouldn't sound half as cool as using carbon does. maybe you can coat it with some clear plastic resin afterwards?
something a little flexible to take the beating? The shop selling the stuff shouldnt be too far from delft. FABRICA MI DIEM, PVNC! |

Ok, Doc really came through today. Organized the front valance for me and was in front of my door an hour later. Thanks mate! Count on an extra pair of hands once you start on your own project.
Switched the front valances between the cars this same morning. Doc turned up in his donor vehicle, which apears to be in better nick then mine..at least from a distance. Good news: Pics are arriving! Car had made a lot of progress again today..tried to show of some of the dents etc but they were gone. I'm expecting to pick the car up on monday or tuesday...no respray taking place, but having a few bits and pieces extra done so that she is structurally sound. Depending on the end price I will have enough left to tackle the suspension. A wheel to steer the front of the car A pedal to steer the rear |
