Since this is the part where the two body shapes differ I would think that they don't mix.
About the restoration. It will take a lot of time to fix this up. I used 3 years on and off on mine. I think you just need to remember one thing as you mention yourself. It's a hobby. Once it becomes a duty its no fun any more. And remember, you can't put a price on a hobby ;-) So just go for it.
