Power steering?
well i googled powersteering and found this site. hey i am from the states, and i like europeans (trying to buy a ticket to travel over there within the next few years) so no hard feelings please.

from my experience with my 1986 toyota corolla gts. with powersteering, it feels nice at low daily driving speeds. w/o (when my car broke down and i am being pushed by other forces i.e. people at a fairly good speed), it is extremely hard to steer. if you do not have the arm strength then i do not suggest getting a manual rack. i mean you eventually get use to it but it is a pain in the @ss getting use to it at less than 10 mph (~16 kmph i think) and parking.

and why i came here is to ask as many sites about corollas to see how hard is it to rebuild a powersteering system. mine is leaking fluid and i might need a rebuild. should i rebuild or should i just buy a new rack later on and get like a shorter rack. i need your input. thanks

George.

Hmmm, I'm used to it. Even with the wide rims on my car. But I must say I've gotten a bit stronger since I bought the car. Big Grin

Seriously: can't you just transplant the whole thing from a wrecked gts? Also, where does it leak fluid? Dumb question

Welcome btw Wave

I have to say the 86's manual steering isn't that bad even with wide wheels. I had a mini with 9" tires and thats one hell of a bastard to park in comparison. Angry

And a mini is a much smaller and lighter car! Huh

Minis feel heavier to steer due to the large positive scrub radius.

The whole point of macpherson strut type suspension like that on the ae86 is that its simple, cheap, and light to steer as its easy to get zero or even negative scrub. I cant see power steering being needed really! Though for a lot of people it will be a shock going from modern PAS to non-assisted.
