Project SE82 (3S-GE powered AE82)
Time for a little update.
Look ma', no stands! (Well... not under the engine anyway.) Drilled the engine mounts yesterday and the engine could hang there by itself for the first time without stands. Unfortunately, the right mount (left in the picture) ended up about 5mm too low. Nothing a pneumatic grinder and the old welding machine couldn't fix though. I guess the japanese thought of me when they designed this car. The power drill fit exactly in the hole for the headlight. On the other side, on the other hand... ..I had to remove some metal.. ..just to weld it back after I had finished drilling. This is what you could make if the hole is marked on the inside of the plate and you need to drill it from the outside.. I have a webserver under my kichen table with a picture gallery.. (Sorry about the folder names being in swedish..) http://pugho.no-ip.com/gallery/stuff/Keffo/ Using: -98 Camry 3.0 V6 Abusing : -85 Corolla 2.0 GTi |

Pugho Wrote:I have been wanting to do this (building a racecar out of an old corolla) for many years, but I always thouth it was for "those other guys". About a year ago I got to thinking.. Why couldn't I do this as well as anybody else? I only have one life, so why not live it now, right? This bloke has a BRILLIANT attitude! and an inspiration to us all NOW I am thinking hard! still no 86 ________________________ |

Project SE82 (3S-GE powered AE82)
Oh crap! I'm way behind on posting my progress in this thread..
Let's see.. This summer my parents took a 3 week vacation to the USA, so I took the opportunity to borrow their house. The corolla wasn't driveable but me and my friend towed it the 20km to my parents driveway and I got to work. But first some pictures about what I had to do to get it towable. The front control arms needed to be somewhat lengthened to make room for the celica's driveshafts. Not much, but some. So I made some new holes in the stock corolla arm.. Welded on some extra material and put it all together.. Cheap Camry discs in the front. Not really necessary for towing, but anyway... The stock lambda sensor cost too much so I got a generic one for 1/3 of the price and welded a standard M22 tread on the exhaust pipe. Also, the fuel system needed to be upgraded, so I made a cache tank out of a piece of 3" exhaust pipe and some crap lying around the shop.. The mountings for the rear suspension arms needed to be modified for the celica stuff to fit, so I cut most of it off. Here you can see the celica arms versus the stock corolla mountings. The celica arms are just a teeny weeny bit longer than the corolla ones. I cut a little hole to make it easier to weld. This is my home-made mounting bracket for the rear arms. Welded in place... And then I made another one just like it for the other two arms, but for some reason I have no pics of the finished thing.. After all this, the car was towed to my parents' place. The fuel system was completed: (the transparent low pressure fuel filter sits on the return hose just so I can verify that the fuel is flowing) Located on the other side of the floor is the fuel pump (from a ford 2.9). The engine electronics were.. oh well.. "completed".. And... The results: http://pugho.teamymse.net/film/keffopremiären.avi <- this link didn't work out so well, but I think you get it.. http://pugho.teamymse.net/film/Video0007.3gp There is still a lot to be done, but I was kicked out from the garage I was renting in october so the car is now standing outdoors by a friend's house. But april 5:th me and my girlfriend will be moving to our own house, with a garage of MY VERY OWN.. So I guess the project will be continued just as soon as we've settled in.. SOARA Wrote:don,t you made comparison of rear and front weels masses befor and after implantation? Hmm... I'm not sure what you mean.. I did not weigh either of the engines so I have no idea where the new center of gravity is, but I am pretty sure that moving the battery to the center of the car balanced out most of the difference. If you are referring to the rather high ride height in the rear, then relax.. It will be lowered. (The ST162 struts are a little bit taller than the AE82 ones.. ) btw.. I uploaded the videos to youtube, along with a couple of other videos. http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=pugho Using: -98 Camry 3.0 V6 Abusing : -85 Corolla 2.0 GTi |

probably, to insert rear celica,s arms and suspension together with a big part of celica,s body was much more easy.. It,s so hard to create the rigt geometry and castors
Sorry about my english |

Now I see what you mean.. and you are probably right.
If I were to do this over again, I would probably go to the junkyard and unscrew this little sucker: from a camry touring, and weld it in place on my corolla. Those mounts are the only ones I've had to build myself to get the celica rear end to fit. Using: -98 Camry 3.0 V6 Abusing : -85 Corolla 2.0 GTi |
