Rear wheel bearing problem?
Hi guys,
My rear end has started to make rumbling noises when I take right corners so I think my left rear wheel bearing is worn out. Is this the noise you normally get when a bearing is worn out or is it something else?
It happened after a few laps of spirited driving on the slalom course yesterday (only noticed it after 100km's of highway driving).
I figured it's the bearing cause the diff would probably make noise in both directions if the internal gears where worn out.
I already ordered a new one for mucho cash so I hope that will solve it.
Please post your thoughts on this problem!

yeah, could probably be the bearing.
But are AE86 bearings that expensive?

I bought my OEM KE20 bearings for 40 euro.
Inner bearing, outer bearing and a sealing thingie.

Ivan,

Is it possible that your warped disc is just hitting the disc cover? You may want to jack your car up and check if the axle is still well in place or if there is any play on the parts, we did take that axle appart, its possible we didn't fasten everything well enough? I cant imagine the wheelbearing just going out like that. It should withstand this weekends punishment easily.

I'll have a look, will have to buy a jack though, or take it to the garage (it's MOT time anyway).

The rear wheel bearings are pretty vunerable, it is the most likely cause of the noise. If it was something rubbing like a warped disk etc then you would hear an intermittant noise from it at low speed

Yeah I figured as much, it's not very noticeable at lower speeds, but I do hear some constant noise at low speed. Yesterday I thought I also warped a disc, I felt some pulsation in my brake pedal, today I couldnt feel it anymore...weird.
I just wanna make sure that my rear-end wont fall apart before I get my new bearing installed. Earliest I could get one was tomorrow afternoon, for 100 euro's..(@Thomas: the rear wheel bearing on an ae86 is about 4-5 times larger than the ones on you dinky toy rear axle Undecided )

Sounds just like the noise mine had, before i changed the bearing. But i have had the rumbling noise long time, but lately it got worse. So much worse, that the car actually wasnt a pleasent experience to drive.
A new bearing did the trick...
100E is pretty cheap, compared to what i payed for mine Confused

Next time I'm importing them from the US, someone was selling koyo bearing sets with retainers for 125 dollars (that's for both sides).
I think I found the possible cause yesterday: my lugnuts were a bit loose.
These revolution wheels have really tight fitting long lugnuts which dont always go ont tight when you use an airwrench. The sound is a bit less dramatic now, but it's still there so I think I fucked up the bearing anyway.

I had a bad wheel bearing twice in my AW11, if its the bearing that's bad, the noise will get worse very fast (in less than 50 km you will think your wheel is about to fall off)

I learned that for the AE86 rear wheel bearings are extremely expensive from Toyota, but Nipparts has them for a fraction of that cost.

Yeah Toyotas bearings costs a fortune! I tried to by off-marked bearings twice, but both times i got the wrong bearings. When they finally found the right ones, they cost more then Toyotas... Undecided
