Route6 3-5-4 gearset
I recently came across a trackcar for sale on Yahoo Auctions with a Route6 3-5-4 gearset installed. So I was intrigued by what's so special about this gearset.

I found this posting on Cartune and it basically describes it as reversing the 4th and 5th gears, like this:

In this posting, it described the 5th to be a 3.5, so it's somewhere between 3rd and 4th and it makes sense to swap 4th and 5th. However, I found other Route6 gearsets that retain the 5th overdrive.
What other benefits could there be of swapping 4th and 5th if it isn't a 3.5?

Route6 3-5-4 gearset
I've seen it done where they put 1st in place of 5th (Lampola gearbox), because 5th gear is at the weakest point of the gearbox, as it's an add-on to the normal 4 gears in the box.
Why they would do it like this, is a mystery to me.

Route6 3-5-4 gearset
I suppose it depends on the application, but my opinion has always been that the 86 would be more driveable if 1st to 4th were geared slightly shorter. Or just make 5th slightly taller.
Obviously that's just my own preference, I doubt anyone else would enjoy such a setup.
That 3-5-4 gearset would drive me insane though.
