The balancing act....
If you advance your ignition timing beyond the stock setting, you can
gain some extra top end power. Too much advance and you get "pinking" or "knocking" which indicates that detonation is occuring. When provided, the engine knock sensor will detect this sound and the ECU will temporarily retard the timing until the knocking stops. However, too much timing advance will make the engine more difficult to start, as the engine will be firing before TDC. Stock timing is always a tradeoff between maximum power and good all round operation under a wide range of operating conditions. A lean mixture is also more difficult to fire, and the start injector will not operate on a warm engine. Maybe this is why it will start better from cold. Cheers... jondee86 The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man. |
