from another forum Wrote:Also look into HushMat (what the OEMs use for sound deadening/heat transfer) as well as Second Skin. Second skin is a spray on/paint on kind of like rhino liner, whereas HushMat is more like a roll on pad like DynaMat.

Dynamat/pad is the most expensive of the bunch with probably the least amount of end result/$.

Confused

Wow... hush mat aint cheap.... the second skin stuff is a bit more affordable.

But all the choices confuse the crap out of me....

And... do I have to remove the current OEM tar impregnated sound deadening???

still not sure if I need to remove the old stuff... yet... but I've been doing some reading... and this looks interesting

"I could make that!" or "that's just _______ in a shiny package!" that's what I did one day when looking for sound deadening material for my car. Dyna mat is a really great product that really cuts down on road noise, body noise/reverb from your awesome system and other annoying sounds in a car. The thing is that it's expensive! I realized that dyna mat is actually sold at Home Depot for a completely different purpose! it's used as a flashing material on house roofs!
the HomeDesperate sells the stuff for 20 bux a roll vs dyna mat's $100!

still learn'en... Big Grin

Stock Interiors shows different kits, (and they explain which is which) for the 2 rwd E7 cars... short door and long door cars. They are also about HALF the cost of Auto Custom Carpet.... (127 to 234) ACC does offer a 20% discount... Undecided Sound Interiors also allows me to get carpet by the yard so I can get matching carpet to finish out the rear and the storage area, this is something I can't get (or at least not easily) with many of the other interior suppliers...

I'm pretty confident it'll be either of the first two.... likely the 2nd one which is their Royal Blue.

It really depends on just how "strong" the actual color is..... samples are on the way Hurray!

oldeskewltoy Wrote:And... do I have to remove the current OEM tar impregnated sound deadening???

second skin Wrote:Our products perform best when installed directly to the sheet metal. Having old asphalt or tar insultion installed between our insulation will reduce the performance by about 35%. Although this is may be the best option for you if the old insulation is going to require extensive labor to remove.

Hmmm... There is one thing I KNOW.... I don't want to remove the original insulation its just too much of a PITA!

So a 35% decrease in product effectiveness..... along with new carpet... and the interior re-installed... will that be enough/work ??

from another forum Wrote:If you put second skin down on the metal than the Hushmat... does it still negate the effectiveness of the second skin?

Not sure... I think in that case it would add to the value. I believe the tar layer might make it harder to minimize the sound.

With that said... on order....

The kit above may just be a starting point... I'm not exactly sure how much I'll need. Will 36 sq ft be enough?? One reason I went with this was Chip Foose is on the box.... NOT Wave

actually the one reason is because it has big pieces (9 - 18" x 32" sheets) many of the other kits use smaller pieces. Another reason is this kit I got off Amazon... and it cost me $138.00... shipped.

it is also time to order carpet.... besides the molded carpet, I'll be getting 2 extra running yards (72" square) so I can make the rear hatch carpet to fit the new space.

Surreptitious gets christened...

sorry no pics of this [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Surreptitious.....]

Joanne and I took a little 2 day vacation down to Newport Oregon.

We loaded up Surreptitious with our stuff, and the two dogs. We dropped the "girls" off at doggy day camp (Tail Wag Inn), and then proceeded down 18 to 101, and then down to Newport.

Joanne was sent a groupon for a 2 day stay in a jacuzzi equipped condo with private access to the beach (access was private, not the beach).

The place is called the Starfish Point Motel - http://www.starfishpoint.com/

"Our" condo as viewed from the beach..

and the view from the condo's lower deck out to the beach... the lower deck is semi- enclosed in the trees so the effect is of being surrounded

I spent about 50% of my time sitting on this deck... just enjoying the sounds of the wind, the ocean, the babbling brook (can be seen emptying into "little creek" in above pic), and the birds and "assorted" additional sounds of nature

WE had a wonderful time... WE had a chance to relax...

So... what does all of this have to do with Surreptitious being "christened"??? While down there we enjoyed some modified Mimosa's (mango juice, orange juice, and champagne).... see where this is heading????

We didn't finish all of the champagne, and although only 1/3 full and partially corked... the top popped inside the small compartment letting loose about 2 or 3 shots worth... gently "christening" one side of the interior compartment without doing damage... Angel

Any coincidence that the christening also happened on Pentecost?
And you did have an excellent view! Thumbs up!

No mirrors... Jeff and I went for a tuning cruise the other day and we saw this, and had to get a photo....

So on to what we were doing. The Winter Loynings tune (2 degrees of timing @ idle) has been simply wonderful. She handles all kinds of different loads wonderfully... FAR better then any tune so far, and easily making this totally daily-able! BUT..... as I noted in our trip to Newport Oregon, the fuel mileage is only fair to good(27mpg), so it would be useful to see if the map can be adjusted to deliver better fuel mileage.

Before we touched anything we plotted the rpm "cloud" (blocks of cells) so we knew where we wanted to adjust. We found that there is similar rpm ranges for around town (moderately high vacuum - MAP) and highway cruise(moderately high vacuum - MAP). We also found that the AFRs in that range varied from low 13s to mid 14s. We then adjusted the AFRs in those cells to mid/upper 15s, we then let the FJO adjust the fuel map accordingly....

Just in case... the new program has a new name so I can always fall back to the old one if things go awry.... Wink

First... Thank you Arieh.... Hurray!

Below is a simple 2 panel, top is my current cluster, bottom is the "new" Zenki cluster Bean Bandit just sent me...

Let me bring you up to date....

oldeskewltoy way back in 2009!!! Wrote:Now.... with the dash out.... and all exposed... Its time I decide how deep this project will get. As of now... the OEM AE71 dash, and wiring will be replaced. Likely with AE86 wiring.

Why replace it??

Below is the dash from my AE71....

The tack only goes to 8k (Surreptitous is getting my new engine... redline@ about 8500). The speedo is a joke... 85 mph. I live very close to Portland International raceway(2 mile road type track) I'll be burying the speedo at least twice a lap... might as well get something more competent to the drivetrain....

First... you can see I "fixed" the tach issue by actually fitting a tach assembly from a 4AGE powered AE82, known in the USA as an FX16. But I've been stuck with the 85mph speedo for 5 years now....

Now I have to decide... swap the zenki speedo into my kouki cluster... or swap in a 9k tach into the zenki cluster(this will also require verifying all the wiring going to, and from the cluster)..... decisions, decisions....

more to come...... Hurray!

Glad it arrived safely and hopefully on time. You are most welcome.
I'm sure you'll find a nice solution for the missing 500rpm.
Eventually I'll have to make a similar decision on my cluster, though I think I'll just run the rpm off the clock Wink

Wow.... I've been quite negligent.... it has been nearly 16 months since an update.....

The first bit of news is I finally chucked the General Exclaim tires... they were just crappy....

In their place I got a set of BF Goodrich Comp2 in 195/50/15

in addition, I recently took a crap shoot on Yahoo Japan, acquiring the molded front splash guards for my car - red arrows point to where they fit around my trim

Over the past year plus, I have begun (with many friends help and encouragement) to actually learn something about my management system - the FJO 341B.

This past December one of these friends and I did a bit of added load tuning. "Added load" are draws on the engine that may cause it to idle down, or stall. The first thing we did was add 1 degree of timing automatically when the cooling fan turns on. In addition we added some ignition as the volts drop a total of 2 degrees volt reading below 11 volts. This has made the idle with loads far more reliable.

More recently I received notice that I was do for emissions testing once again, every 2 years....

Well if you remember 2 years ago her first attempt she failed as a "gross polluter" her numbers then were 1100HC, and 5.0CO. The requirement to pass is 220HC and 1.0CO. This time the first attempt to pass also failed, but the numbers were far closer 470HC and 1.2CO

Now as to learning more about the FJO.... one thing we learned... how to adjust idle fueling.......

in the middle of this set up screen is "idle injector time", along with "idle manifold pressure". Originally these were set based on a larger engine... one of the adjustements we did early was change manifold pressure, it was raised from 30kpa to 50kpa, and injector time was lowered by over 35%. This gave us a MUCH smoother idle, and more control.

Back to the current emissions test... Once I had the new #s(470HC, 1.2CO), I had a plan of of attack, take some of the idle injector time out... we lowered the injector time from 2.37msec to 2.22msec and the afr went from 13.6-14.2, up to 14.7 to 15.2. This time I went back to emissions and she passed... 110HC, .0556CO

This time it should be easier to keep her clean too.......

Now I need to do is figure out a proper acceleration enrichment table

this one doesn't look like it is set with anything but haphazard guesses
