T50 to AZ6... a "new" option for gearbox issues
Alex Wrote:Interesting post...

But, are you really sure that t50 gearbox is so weak?
Just one example. If I check history of my ae85, I can presume that it has been used rough wihtout frequent services. It's 23 years old, and I must say that my gearbox is in good shape (at least by my amateur judgement). Shifting is very smooth. Even on some newer cars that I drove shifting is harder then on ae85.

Just for clafication: AE85 doesn't use the T50, it uses a K50. They are weaker than the t50, adequate for the 3au engine producing somewhere around 70hp, but they die fairly easily behind 4ages.

My K50 and 3au are mint Hurray!

ae85 uses t50 too..
k50 is wireclutch

and just for the record, the trd gears for the t50 isn't dogshift or straight cut gears so it isn't a dogbox
as far as I know only quaife makes straight cut dogshift gears to the t50
and they are alot stronger than stock gears, not because of the straight cut part but because they are MUCH wider
straight cut gears are actually weaker than helical gears

but still I've managed to break a T50 quaife gearbox behind my 4A-GE engine..
but that was because the gear linkage did fail so I had the gearbox in 2 gears at the same time that did end up with locked up rear wheels..

but I can promise you one thing.. the t50 gearbox steals ALOT hp compared to the quaife gearbox
and the toyota/mazda 6gears box is the same?
it's known for stealing even more hp than t50 or w58

So you are saying that there are two models of ae85? I know for a fact that unless modified, all ae85s in New Zealand have k50s.

I think they are referring to SR-5's..which arent ae85's but have ae86 chassis codes. The real AE85 might well have a k50 for all I know.

oldskewltoy i'm quite intrigued by this project. hope it comes to fruition. you've got my interest. if they do another "American Touge" and this project is done, you'll have to bring out your 86 with one in it to get Tsuchiya's opinion Thumbs up!

Well... UPDATE... I have a pair of photos... the first casting in aluminum is done! This is JUST a rough casting... it needs some(a great deal) of machine work... it is also currently heavy... BUT that will come down with the machining process

I like the idea, and will be paying attention. My current T50 is ok, but I've got another engine waiting in the wings that will probably demolish it, along with the rear end, so I'll need something better, eventually.

Oldskewltoy

I'm very intrigued by this prospect and very impressed with the research you have done, but i'm a little concerned by the cost projection that is being put out there and whether the gear ratios of the AZ6 are THAT much better to warrant the cost over a W box. I am all for more reliability and a tighter shift but I dont want to pay the price of my car again to be able to make the conversion, especially since finding a garage to carry out the work at a reasonable cost may be a bit of a difficult one.

Looking over everything you have achieved I look forward to seeing more progress and getting a real cost projection for us European lot. How much longer do you think it will be before you have something up and running? If everything sits well and the costing is right I may consider this in the future myself.

EDIT: That being said, I have just read your post over at HachiRoku.net and i'm very surprised by the pricing for the US market. If it works out at a similar pricing in the UK at the current exchange rate, then my initial interest has jumped up to 'on my shopping list'. The only issue being, you have stated you may not supply it as a kit. Would you make an exception for the overseas market?

T50 to AZ6... a "new" option for gearbox issues
Well without straying too far outside "projects", it all depends..... There is ONLY $1000 invested so far... $500 of my money... about $500 of Pineapple Racing's... If $5000 had been invested it would likely be done by now.... Concerning your request for just the adpater...I'm guessing that EVERYTHING will hinge on demand.... Full kits will take priority....

So coming back in to the "Projects" section, I'll close by saying lets wait until I can say its done and and it works well before figuring out what the final costs are... From MY own POV... The used AZ6 transmission has/will cost me $900, I'm expecting the total bill for my swap to be $2800-$3000... or about $1800-$2000 for doing the engineering and paying for the casting...

WHY it has taken 9 months already.......... Angry Angry Angry
$$$ talks and I should have collected 10 "pre investors" to give me $500 each...that way it would have been done and for sale by now.... oh well 20/20 hindsight....) )
