left turn signal always flashes. bulbs are good

I have an 86 3door hatch with the carb'd 4ac

i got it without working signals. the blinker relay was bad so i replaced it.
now the corolla blinks left as soon as you turn the key to acc or start it and it keeps blinking. the hazards work and all blink but when you turn them off it still blinks left and doesnt stop. even if i try to turn on the right hand blinkers.

i checked the bulbs and replaced a bad bulb but it still does this. any ideas on how i can fix it?
