Changing propshaft bearing. Anything I need to know?
Hi guys,
I'm going to be changing the bearing on my propshaft as there's a bit of play in the current one. I've bought a new one from Toyota: I'm guessing it's a matter of undoing the four bolts that secure the prop to the bearing. Then there's a nut that's got a crimped edge over it. Am I right in thinking that I simply undo this bolt (is it easy to undo?) and then I can remove the prop from the bearing? Am I right in thinking put the prop through the bearing, torque up nut then re-fit and that's it? Also have the rear gearbox oil seal to replace. If I remember correctly, it just comes out by hand as the intermediate shaft from the box holds it in place normally? Rear gearbox oil seal: I think I know what I've got to do, but just wanted to check first! Cheers all! 1985 Sprinter Trueno GT Apex 2013 GT86 Miltek Exhaust, Injen Induction. |

recommend you mark all flanges BEFORE you begin, and when re-assembling using the marks to make sure everything goes back in the same place. Re-assembling it in this fashion should not need rebalancing... which can be the need if you don't put the marks back together

As above.
Undo the nut with a impact gun and you also need a 2/3 arm puller. 1979 Toyota Corolla KE35 1983 Toyota Corolla AE86 1985 Toyota Corolla AE86 |

Hmm, I've already had it off when I took the gearbox off a couple of weeks ago. I've no idea if it was bolted up against the same flanges. I guess the chances are one in four.
Also, I don't have air tools and I don't have a puller. Doesn't sound like I can't get it done at the moment. 1985 Sprinter Trueno GT Apex 2013 GT86 Miltek Exhaust, Injen Induction. |

The pieces of the driveshaft are supposed to be balanced seperately... but sometimes things will be a bit out of whack 20+ years down the road and not reassembling exactly the same can potentially 'show' those problems.
If a problem wasn't noticed after last time, just mark it this time as a 'just in case' measure. Andrew |

I did my propshaft bearing a couple of weeks ago. You don't need airtools to change it, but I would recommend at least the following:
Vice, Flathead screwdriver, Hammer, Socket wrench, Torque wrench and a Mandrel or a piece of wood. Do like this: 1. Mark everything up and remove the shaft from the car. 2. Use the Flat head screwdriver and hammer to make the nut round (or roundish) again. 2. Put it in a vice and undo the nut. 3. Hammer out the shaft, using either a mandrel or a piece of wood. 4. Replace the bearing, remember to face it the correct way! 5. Torque up the nut (pref a new nut, but the old one works fine) first to 196Nm then loosen the nut and torque it up to 30Nm. 6. Hammer the nut so it gets deformed into the groove. 7. Install and line it up. 8. Done! |
