Stock hachi stuff is probably around 0.7 or 0.8 mm thick. If the shapes you need to make aren't to complex then 1mm sheet metal is the easiest to work with (less risk of blow-through, nice and solid too).

Would also say 1mm but tidy up the edges of the hold first and make sure all the areas are free of any old paint and dirt for a nice weld

this may be very off topic..okay it -is- off topic...
but i have noticed something diferent about the rust in European Ae86's...mainly in the pictures posted above. The really badly rusted ones in Australia seem to never rust there in the footwell..only in the rear arches, windscreen, i could go on...but could it be different weather conditions? namely snow that causes the moisture to build up there???? |

yea maybe, but i think we get a lot more rain, at least in ireland.
Cars here would have had rust only in the arches, rear of the sill and boot lid a few years ago. given another few years of neglect cars living in warmer climets might develop rust in the same places. |

i think it's not only the snow, it's more the mixture of snow and salt or the stuff that's used to defrost the ice in the winter that makes it more aggressive
and when you have no garage where it can dry over night it gets even worse |
