shim adjustment?
i always thought that 4age shims were the self-adjusting hydraulic type, but the mechanik that's done my head said he checked and that they are the normal type, and had to be adjusted.

So the question is where do i go to adjust them. Anybody had experience with this? Do i just go to the official toyota dealer?

Shims are adjusted by measuring the clearance between the shim
and the back of the cam. If you need to adjust the clearance, you
take out the existing shim and replace it with a shim that is either
thicker or thinner. You can do it yourself if you have patience and
measuring tools (feeler gauges and micrometer/verniers). If you
need new shims, you will have to buy them from Toyota (expensive)
or see if you can get used ones from other 4AGE owners Smile

Or you can take the car to the Toyota Service Centre and have
them do the job... depends on how busy you are, and how much
you want to spend.

yes i have the feeler thingy, so i could measure the cleareance. The problem is you have to have thousands of different shim plates to set it up perfectly, which i think only toyota has? right? What would be the easiest solution?

I did it myselve. Yo uneed the measure the clearence remove the current shim and measure that.

Lets say the clearance is 5micro meters to much. so you ned a shim that is 5micro thicker. You then measure the current shim at 60 micrometers you will then need an 65. You could get them at most work shops. I beliece a couple mazda's use the same type of plates!
