thinking of getting a mig welder
i've been thinking of getting a mig welder for some time. ever since i developed a rotten hole in my first car.
are there any makes or models that people can recommend and some to steer clear of. also i don't want a monster gas job just a little one for small jobs and some minimal panel work.
any info would be greatly appreciated Smile

Do it, its a million times better than a rod welder.

Go for a second hand Miller, you can get a single phase one for about 400€.

Dont know about UK but over here you need a contract with a delivery company to get the argon gas, and its really expensive (you can weld you regular co2 used in bars for beer but over here you get a huge fine if your caught using those).

im not sure about the access to gas but i don't think anyone cares here if you use co2.
i'll look into miller and see how accessible they are in the UK

Mini canisters are all off the shelf from places like Machine Mart and Halfords. You want CO2 for mild steel, Argon / CO2 mix for Stainless. You can use CO2 for Stainless but the weld go black - not an issue if the weld is going to be dressed.

You have to remember these big canisters are on loan from the gas company to the pub and remains the property of the gas provider; so if its in your garage its technically stolen.

Even if you buy a big canister of gas off the provider you technically ownly own the contents and the bottle and when done it has to be returned to them, they actually cost alot of money! - obviously though alot get through the net - like the big one I have sat in my garage! Big Grin
