I think many are in love with the original AE86 including all the history and legends that it has accumulated over the years. Thats a great thing, but no new car will ever be able to replace that.

Regarding th ae86 community becoming the MX5 community.. In many racing and performance minded communities the MX5 is steadily becoming increasingly popular. On pistonheads its the only Jap-car with its own forum section, grass-roots race classes around the world are thriving.

Meanwhile the AE86 community in my eyes is slowly moving away from all the reasons people claim they love them. As hachi's become scarcer and in worse shape it becomes more about nurturing the cars back to life and appreciating them from a distance for what they once were. A classic. Just look around on our forums. The people actively enjoying their cars every day or participating actively in regular motorspots activities are what? 20-30%. The rest of us work in our jobs, slowly accumulating parts for our car, constantly chasing a certain vision that few people ever reach.

Its tragic in a way... I think I'll go buy my hachi some parts now to try and feel better.

I think it you want a modern AE86 you have to build your own. If you were to buy a battered existing car and spend the change (up to the cost of the new car) you would have something pretty special at the end.

I would love to test my re-invented car against anything we eventually get from toyota that is it's true sucessor and not just some average rwd hatch with 86 in its chassis number.

just get a well looked after E46 M3 for probably less money?

Power drop! 160hp instead of 200hp! Now with a target weight of 1200kg they are recreating the homologation TA64 Celica!

Oh and the target audience is now 30-50 years old, so not the 20 year old boy racer... I wonder what will be left when it hits the road in 2011? A second generation Auris sports model?

imho 160bhp is enough power for a Fiat 500 Abarth, Ford Fiesta ST, VW Polo GTi and other small cars, but not for an AE86
i really hope that they make an indipendent car and not a high powered sport edition from a actual Toyota

I believe that it's too early to be certain of anything related to this car. But I just hope that this will be some kind of entry level 086, and that "GT" version is coming later with some more powerful figures.
