Clean oil is more important than how slippy it is.
You are better off using mineral & changing the oil every 3,000 miles with a top quality filter, than running a synthetic for extended periods. Changing synthetic & filter every 3k is VERY expensive. I use Castrol GTX 10W40 in the 20v and the 16v 4AGE. I get it cheap and it's a decent quality and the right grade for the engine and ambient temps. It's wise to keep the oil temperatures down (eg around 90 deg C) to prevent the molecular breakdown of the oil. Higher temperatures in forced induction engines often require expensive synthetics, but for NA 4AGE's, quality minerals are fine. The same goes for LSD oil - you may as well just use a decent mineral LSD oil and change it regularly. Regular changes with synthetic becomes soooo expensive. The amount of sludge that can be generated in an LSD is frightening. Leaving synthetic in for a year is just too long and the contaminants will damage the LSD. If you do a lot of drifting, you will need to change the oil every 3 months at least. I do mine every month. |

Valvoline has this little advisor script on their website that will guide you through engine choice of your car. Interestingly enough the AE86 is actually mentioned within the list with recommendations
This is what they recommend: Engine: Valvoline Durablend or Valvoline Maxlife engine oil (10W30, 10W50, 15W40, 20W40 or 20W50) Gearbox: Valvoline DuraBlend Gear Oil GL-5 75W90 Diff: Valvoline DuraBlad Gear Oil GL-5 LS Might be interesting to know Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

Interestingly enough the AE86 is actually mentioned within the list with recommendations 20W40 is pointless and 20W50 is far too thick unless you live in the desert. As for GL-5 in the T50 gearbox, errrr no, since GL-5 lubricants contain an additive (sulphur I think) that is corrosive to our copper syncros... Best oil by far for the T50 is Redline MT90 (GL-4 75W90). |

If not someone should email valvoline to tell them they recommend oil that destroys equipment. Damn sorry I hear of it now though, should just throw the stuff in and sue valvoline and let them pay for my new TRD Diff 20vWill Wrote:Best oil by far for the T50 is Redline MT90 (GL-4 75W90).Need to figure out where I can get that here then Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |

Throwing GL-5 in your gearbox and then sueing them for a new diff would be a bit silly now wouldnt it? BTW, they probably have a disclaimer for all the advise they give you through the internet so I doubt you could even make a case. But since you where only joking who cares anyway. I never buy valvoline so I dont care either way.

Hmm, didn't read your post well enough will, sorry you were talking about gearboxs, I was thinking about my LSD
Ok, so GL-5 eats up the synchros of the gearbox, better not use that one then How about the diff then? Cause that is the one I am going to be changing on short notice... Greetz, Bastiaan "mux213" Olij Moved down under, no more hachi |
