Tall 5th gear for T50 - YOU CHOOSE!
Hey guys,

some of you might have seen me post this on other forums so I'll try to be brief and straight the point as much as possible.

As we all know, the T50 trans has a really short 5th gear and while this may be acceptable for some, particularly those who spend a lot of time on track, for the rest of us, it can be a bit of a nuisance on our daily drivers.

This is especially true if you have or want to install a shorter (numerically higher) final drive, a 4.778 for example.

The stock T50 ratios:
First Gear: 3.587:1
Second Gear: 2.022:1
Third Gear: 1.384:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.861:1

Revolver Japan has/had(?) a taller 5th gear which was a 0.767 ratio but another well respected member in the AE86 community has suggested that a 0.737 may actually be more suited for those who want a more relaxed 5th gear for cruising.

It is entirely possible for me to have both gears produced but:

-I need 10 confirmed pieces before I can go into production
-I will need a GOOD WORKING condition 5th gear set as a sample
-we can generally meet the expected ratio +/- 2%
-cost will be around $300-$400msrp (I am willing to give all initial orders a break)
-All interested members must be willing to commit 50% up front
-time frame is between 3-4 months from the time I receive the 5th gear sample
-the steel that we will be using is likely going to be a forged SA8620

For those who will likely be sticking to the OEM 4.3 final drive, the revolver 0.767 might be better as most 4AGs are making less than 100# of torque. The assassin 0.737 is for those who already have or are planning on going for a more aggressive 4.778 and shorter 5.1x final drive but still want to maintain an acceptable cruising rpm.

on club4ag. I've already got 6 votes for the 0.737 and 3 votes for the 0.767 unit.

I want to see if it's possible to coordinate, rally together any more interest to actually get this into production!

Oh and here's a couple pictures of my car, because everybody loves pictures Tongue

Be sure to mouse over the graph to see the differences between the 2 first gears. Play around with our gearing calculator too to change the tire sizes/redline/final drive to suit your own personal setup!

I was on the page with the votes a few days ago, but now I can't find it. Can someone provide the link?

The interest is definitely there and alive - however, I am worried that when it all comes down to it, people will not be willing to make the 50% deposit.

I think it's a mighty interesting part, but I'm too far removed from a driving car right now to be investing in new parts.

I would like a taller 1st gear to be honest.
2.9-3.1 maybe.
Nice ratios then for a cammed 4AGE with stock 5th gear and 4.778 final drive.

Very nice! I always wondered why the 5th gear was that low in the AE86...
Personally I would go for the 0.767 but then I would need a T50 first! Big Grin
I'll promote this topic on the FP and make it a sticky as well.

I won't vote as it's unlikely I would part with the cash.

I personally don't have much interest in changing the internals of the T50 gearbox unless it's for something that would add strength or for much better synchros . I've had 3 different T50 gearboxes across two cars and not one of them has been perfect when it comes to shifting gears, at least one gear has to crunch or be stubborn, therefore I would be more interested in a way to find a stronger gearbox or a cheap method to make the T50 stronger above all.
