UPDATE good and bad
Finally got my car back after almost 6 months and it's now here with me in Khartoum. Battery didn't survive the 6 months in the container so I replaced that already... unfortunately the starter refuses to work once more. already took it out and replaced the brushes inside as I tought this was the problem refitted everything but no luck. When trying to start you can here the starter engaging and retracting again - loud click noise but it doesn't turn... will try hitting it and see if this cures it else I need to take it out again and rebuild/replace No news on the tuning side of things as there is no point tuning a car that doesn't run... Check all of the main Earths.
Have you tried putting it in gear and rocking the engine over by pushing the car gently back and forth ? (make sure the ignition is off !) An analogue brain in a digital World |

Did all that already - last time the problem got solved by taking everything apart and putting it back to gether without changing a thing - aka the Microsoft way - just more tiresome than hitting a reset button.

had the same problem, click but nothing.

If you mean the copper contacts inside just under the cap with the three screws - I just replaced them yesterday. Anyway will pull it out gain today an connect it directly.

Had the same problem on Ivans car once.. that turned out to be worn bearingcaps inside the starter.. Cheap fix if you take it apart yourself.

Well after I replaced the copper contacts yesterday with no change I took the starter out again today.
Did all the checks according to the manual (continuity and function) and surprise surprise everything is a ok. So just like last time I put everything back into the car and voila it startsvas if it never happend. Despite one thing, my timing is now out so I'll have a look for the nearest garage that hasone tomorrow to set it (my own should arrive in about 6 weeks). So it remains a mistery but I don't care as long as tge car works Cheers for the inputs. AE86 ex-daily |

No master switch - this is my daily. I've sold my race car when I started living all over the world as cars are a bitch to transfer, especialy if you got 4 so now I'm down to one car again.

The starters have a contact problem with the plunger in the solenoid. Depending on how you torque the batt cable to the starter it will angle one of the contacts inside causing poor contact. They also (pretty commonly) get carbon tracking/buildup and eventually it builds up enough resistance to make it not want to start at times, this can be cleaned up with a dremel/rotary tool and a small wire wheel attatchment.
I've found it best to install the battery cable onto the starter with the cover off the solenoid so I can make sure it doesn't angle the contacts preventing good seating of the plunger. Andrew |
