thanks for the comments. Just asking 4000GT, don't jump out the window.
Let's put things in context: I'm using 7.5" with 195/50/15 semi slicks at the front and 8" 205/50/15 kuhmo mx "normal" street tires at the rear. It was an experiment for the last autocross I participated and I liked how the car handled so it stayed. Not seeking the ultra stretched looks, it's just that I found this enkei 9.5 rims that match exactly my big lip 8" rears, so I was thinking on putting the 8" at the front and the 9.5 at the rear (with overfenders) and use 205's all around. So.. Let me change the question: what tire size would be the optimal if i use 9.5's at the rear without making the car to "heavy" to handle for my 4ag 20v? your comments will be really appreciated thanks! here's a pic of my current setup. |

I am running 15x8 all round at the moment with Toyo R888 205/50. I am doing a K24 turbo motor build for the track car, so will need a lot more tyre. Now the issue is its not one rule for all, each tyre (depending on wall height and construction) will run different widths. I plan on running a 250 wide Dunlop slick on the back 9.5-10 inch rim, and 220 slick on the front with a 9 inch rim. In terms of a heavy to handle car, its more the fronts that make it heavy, and not just the tyre width, but also the castor, camber and toe. Add to that the weight in the front over the tyres. Powersteering solves all that! If you plan to stick with slicks, then I wonder if you dont have enough tyre already? Not many people run wider slicks on an NA 4AGE, though many N2 cars run 253-245... you can youtube some of the races and they have the tyre specs |

8s and 9s will take to 225 tires like a charm. On the rears they will be stretched just about enough to get maximum performance out of them, tires work best with just the slightest amount of tension on the sidewall.
225-45-15 should work, 225-50-15 if you need the added gearing. With that said, I do remember r888s being REALLY wide in most sizes. If the 205 is similar you should be able to get it onto the 9.5" rims. Just measure across the thread and check if its a true 205 or a cheater. R888 come in a special order 225/45 And you are right the 205's R888's feel very wide on an 8" rim. |

But still R888 195/50-15 are recommended to be used on 5.5" to 7.0" rims. 225/45-15 its 7.0 to 8.5"...I guess its because that the wall is so rigid...

In miata circles there has been a lot of testing of the 225-45 tires. 225s on a 9 inch rim is now the standard there, with thousands of race kilometers and wins collected along the way (e.g. current 24h of thunderhill winners). No failures, so this particular case has been proven to work.

I had and will have 205 on 8" again and never had the slightest problem - for drifting a 195 will do on the rear just as well. AE86 ex-daily |
