motor oil for 16V
Well I'm not advocating it as an absolute truth, just something that happened to me on 2 occasions. Both times on very tired old 4age's.
My current mazda 1.5l engine has also started consuming oil after an idiotic mishap 2 years ago (someone drained my gearbox oil and refilled 4 liters of engine oil on top of what was already there), and I have just stuck with the 10W40 specified for it. Consumption hasn't gotten any worse, so that's my strategy for this car for the time being (engine has 210.000 km's on it). Changing to thicker oil did jack squat for reducing oil consumption in 2 of my last 4age's in my ae86, just thought I'd share that for what it's worth.
If an engine is worn down, your probably not helping things much by pouring thicker oil in it (contrary to most advice I received back then).

As far as brands of oil: we are on the same page with that. I will not contest that some engines might require more specific types of oil, but those are mostly more modern engines, and even then a lot of the fuss can be avoided by just changing oil more frequently. This especially goes for the 20v 4age for example which has a habit of caking oil in the head because it runs hotter.

I put valvoline 10w60 in my non crossflow 8v 1982 datsun. Before the change it ran on 10w40. Since the change i've had no oil consumption and i know it gets better lube when cold. It says synthetic oil but its a semi one. Any synthetic or semi is better than mineral.

I think the most important thing when it comes to oils is to makes sure there is enough in the engine and as ivan said to change it once year/1000-1500km.

I always put 10w40 semi-syn Valvoline in mine. Oil consumption is minimal and i check the oil like every 2 weeks. Oil and filter changes every 6000km.

Minimal as in my engine uses very little oil. I've read stories of worn 4age's that need constant oil refilling.

My driving style is normal i guess with the occasional spirited drive. I never push it when it's cold. I try to keep it under 3000rpm until the water temp is at normal level. And when i arrive at my destination i let it idle for 30secs before i turn it off. Maybe every few days i give it some 'pedal to the metal' with high rpm thru all the gears. That's mostly when there's some asshole on my bumper and i want to get rid of him. Tongue

I always buy 5l bottles of valvoline for an oilchange. After 6000km and a few refills 'if needed' there's always some left in the old bottle. So oil use is not that much. Remember there's so many variables to take into account. How much miles is on the engine, how is it maintained, how has it been driven etc...

Forgot to mention this, i use hks oilfilter. But an oem filter is basically just as good.

I have freshly rebuild engine....about 15.000kilometers...
My style of driving is normal to a little aggressive and some hammerings from time to time.
At 5.000 kilometers the last time used about 400-500ml oil

type of oil 100% synthetic 10w40 amsoil
