I think the correct term is "punching" for this.
I have seen two types of punching so far.
Punched in Engraved:

Or punched out/punched through:

I think the difference is whether the cars came from the Tahara plant (A52/A54) or the Kanto plant (M21 or framenumber starting with a 5, e.g. AE86-50xxxxx)

BTW: I'm sharing these two examples as they are already publicly available on the interwebs. Wink

You are thinking of number punches, but looking at a picture of a factory plate I suspect they are engraved.
[edit] banpei just beat me to it.. the second pic shows punched writing
So that would be the best way to do it, probably best to have it done by a specialized company.
Just google typeplaat graveren and you'll find some dutch shops that do it..
Might not look exactly like the original but much better than what you'd get by hand.

@Ivan You could be right about engraving when I look closer to the first one. It looks too clean to me for punching it in.

I think you are right, I meant punching.
However, mine seem engraved like the first one, engraved and hardly readable, might go for a new one in the future.

They are indeed much harder to read, especially if it has been scratched or the coating has worn a bit.

In any case mine is original Red, with Velour interior, AFM, EGR but no CAT

If I remember correctly CAT was optional here until sometime in '86
Cat was not available in Switzerland until '86, emissions regulation changed that year to allow emissions do be passed without mandatory testing using leaded gas (which destroys cats).

According to the EPC they are either Swiss or Australian (sold as the Sprinter) and both have a 4A-C. Did you ever come across these cars?
There is a guy showing up in some years at the Japan Classic car meet in Bleienbach who has two red 3-door Levins, one is 4A-GE equipped and the other is a stock 4A-C car. I'll PM you his phone number if you want more info about it.
