So been a hot minute, but some progress has been made..

Got the diff finished for old mate. Was a fun project in the end. Turns out welding 40 year old cheap shit steel is not amazing lol but got there. With the large gap on the lower arm mount, we did some maths and raising the mount to the diff effectively shortened the arm position by less than a mm, so we decided to just send it lol

Car is mostly back together now. Got clutch and flywheel adventures sorted in the end, and everything back in the car.

Basically down to wiring now. It's painfully close, I have a list of things to sort out once it's running but they are all short term adventures. Had to modify the driver side mount as you can see.

The original way i had the 3rd bolt didn't leave enough room for the starter motor (only a few mm in it, but still) i also added some bracing etc post the pics.

Got the water lined up and sorted, even have the oil filter fitted lol. The water setup is a bit messy, but works. This engine is an earlier fwd 3sge beams engine. Modifying the water route was simpler and cheaper than swapping headgaskets etc to use the stock rwd stuff... It occurred to me that I had no easy access to the new efi tank stuff. Was a bit of a guess and shoot solution, but turned out ok. Needs a little bit of foam or rubber to seal the plate, but all in all it worked out pretty well.

Thanks for looking chaps [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86]

Nice progress! The small hatch is a nice and simple solution and looks almost stock! Thumbs up!

Thanks mate.

Ita been a long project lol. But the finish is kinda in sight...

Have been thinking long and hard in the background about ecu location etc. This was the solution I came up with. Sits safely behind the kick panel, and I'll leave the ecu access cable attached and up in the glove box.

There is a small leak from the clutch reservoir I need to sort out, most likely need a o ring or something at the mounting point... So its been a while. With Christmas and all that, things slowed to a crawl. But a recent poke by the wife to remind me I need this running in a week to do daddy duties with the school run, I've been busting a gut.

So I have been sitting bricks over the wiring. But put my big boy pants on and got stuck in.

All in all it seemed to have gone pretty well. It did take some wind out of my sales when someone pointed out I had dislexied the firing order lol. Simple enough fix, throwing the ignition signals ina few different spots. Lol

So far im dangerously close to attempting start up. All the wiring bar the thermo fan is done. And threw a new battery in her to check the basic layout. Everything seems OK for now, I'll do some ecu stuff then attempt to run through the various bits like priming the fuel lines and checking for leaks.

Im fucking terrified its gonna go boom somehow, but gotta give it a go sometime right ??? So had a mild panic, but looks like I've got through the bulk of the finish wiring.

Starter and alt have been wired up.

Charge light now works.

Made a battery strap ... [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86]

Had some fits and starts, but finally getting somewhere.

Turns out I had wired the fuel pump and thermo relay backwards. My bad.

Spent the day swapping and redoing some bits in the relay box, and boom....priming fuel pump.

Threw a tank of 98 at it,and primed it half a dozen times to build pressure...

And no leaks boys and girls. None. Yay.

Looks like my tps may be norked, as is my fuel level sender. Hopefully a new tps on the way shortly and I'll sort the fuel level sender once running. [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86]

So had victories... got the old girl to start.

Had some issues with timing, and ended up making my own timing marks on the engine. Got to learn some cool new shit [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86]

Annnnnnmd

Then it seems I fucked the clutch assembly somehow.

Car won't select gear. Can start it in gear, but the clutch won't disengage enough to be usable.

So ..

All apart again. Most likely cause is i fucked the throwout bearing connection to the fork...

Two steps foreward, one step back, that's often the way of things. Its still progress, so keep it up!

You know those days you should have just stayed asleep ?

Yeah this week. All of it.

So I figured things out, made some progress on the throwout bearing.... the clip supplied was not in anyway gonna work properly. Did some bending and tweaking and got it apples.

Then pulled the clutch to check I had the plate the right way round..... yes.

Putting backtogether I snapped the head n off a bolt. Fuck my life.

12 hours of fuckery later, I had drilled the bolt out and salvaged the thread. Go for reinstall 2.....

Second bolt head snapped. Fml. Closer inspection (yes I should have done this first ) showed damage to the end of the bolts. The depth of the whole is correct but im guessing the thread doesn't go all the way down.

And the bolts should have been supplied with spring washers. Without these, the bolts were bottoming out.

So another few hours spent drilling the 2nd bolt out

Hopefully today grab a new set of bolts and washers and throw it back together for good.

My wide band turned up this week also, so I'll weld the bung in and have that fitted up hopefully. Then I can start fiddling and making it reliable (hopefully) [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86]

Took the chance to tidy up a small coolant leak at the back.

I dunno if it was the stock gasket failing or the welds I did when modifying the fitting for the water routing, so I spooged both.

Hopefully this has sorted the rear end leak. Also fitted a new water temp sender fr the dash, so see how that goes.

Waiting on some cash to organise the fan and shroud setup, hopefully that won't be too far away

Also, the difference between the various quality #stainlesssteel offerings.

The water pipe under the throttles was made from 2 different suppliers of stainless.... cant recall the designations, but I think the straight was 316...

But the bend is an absolute disaster for corrosion resistance.... :/ [Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86][Image: AEU86 AE86 - Family man's ae86]

So there was some emotional moments lol, but we got there.

A few tidy ups and still waiting on bits and pieces like the fan and shroud etc..

But she works.
