Fast forward three weeks and we're down to this:
A new engine. The block turned out to be warped at cylinder #3, so I had to source a replacement. The photo above shows the engine after cleaning as it was very dirty. How dirty you may ask: This dirty! It's as if someone forgot to drain the engine oil and topping up the engine for the past 10 years! It had some lower compression on cylinders #2 and #3, but most probably it was due to the deposits on the exhaust valves and close properly due to this... Another package arrived today with a new water pump:
The mechanic doesn't trust the one from my own engine and the one on the replacement engine has rusty internals, so that's not a great idea either. So I dropped by and found the people in the garage doing this: Yep, they just lifted the engine out of the car when I arrived. I also found this on the bench: The head came out very well after cleaning, valves were cut and compression test was good! Finally, the bottom also was cleaned up well and ready to be mated to the head again. While being on vacation my mechanic rebuilt the engine and installed it:
This is actually a screenshot of the video he sent me on Wednesday, but forgive me for being lazy and only posting the screenshot. He said at the end of the video he would test drive the car. On Thursday he called me while I was passing lorries in the left lane on the autobahn, so of course I didn't pick up my phone. When I called him back he had bad news for me: during the test drive the engine suffered from fuel starvation so I'll also need a new (mechanical) fuel pump. I found out there are actually two types of fuel pumps for the 2T engine: with two and three connections. The former has an inlet from the fuel filter and outlet towards the carburetor. The latter has an additional outlet for a return line. Both seem to have the same partnumber (23100-19105) and diagrams show both types. The partnumber 23100-19105 is tied to the Carina/Celica TA60 specifically, the TA40 has partnumber 23100-29305. The TA40 part is only available with two connectors so I thought they would be interchangable for the 2T. What also didn't help is that the normal suppliers (e.g. autodoc and such) all consider the TA60 and TA40 parts to be the same, have about 3 or 4 alternatives but don't have any of them in stock. On the photographs of the engine fuel system I made some time ago I could only find an inlet and outlet on the pump, so my assumption was I have a pump with two connectors. With some digging I found a replacement pump by a Slovenian company for a reasonable price and ordered it: https://www.ptzfuelpump.com/en/fuel-pump...rs/pn-3494 Then 10 minutes later my mechanic replied to my question and according to him I actually need the one with three connections. The only one I could find for sale was via Amayama and ordered that one as well, but it was about three times as expensive... Amayama came back with an expected delivery date of the 19th, so it will take another week to arrive. Unfortunately, the mechanic is on holiday as of this Thursday, so it will take at least another month before the fuel pump will be installed.
The rebuild of the engine got out of hand due to various reasons and this makes me wonder if it would still be viable to offer the Carina up for sale. I probably could still run manage to not loose to much on it when offered for sale for 8-9K with all parts, but I doubt any is sane enough to buy a car with clearly visible rust on the front fenders (even though I do have spares) and some other places as well. I could tackle those spots as well, but I'm afraid it ends up as a concourse car that nobody wants to buy because I have to ask more then 10K for it. There has been a second-generation Carina GL for sale in Germany with an asking price of 13K. It has not shifted well over a year now and there clearly is no interest in such a car. So investing more before selling sounds to me like a very unwise move.
