TRD Short Shifter Rattle Noise, It's Normal?
I like the stock shifter with delrin rotational cup and cusco collar (no rattles). The feel would be even more direct without the big bushing on the lever; however, it helps decrease effort due to the extra weight which is nice.

T3 is good too, but the spring they use in the assembly is a touch firm imo. It was a bit too snappy for my taste. Shifting effort also increased.

I've tried the delrin collar bushing and cusco brass collar back to back. I preferred cusco since the feel seemed more consistent.

TRD Short Shifter Rattle Noise, It's Normal?
Sorry for kicking this old topic from the dead.
I have the same issue with a TRD short shifter that rattles above 5000rpm. The rattle is consistent with the engine revs. I have swapped the brass collar with an original. It makes less noise now and it's bearable. I do have a C's short shifter that I'll install soon and I'll report back if that resolved my issue as well. Wink

TRD Short Shifter Rattle Noise, It's Normal?
i installed an aliexpress short shifter, new bushings all around and it sounds quite loud (i guess its transmission noises)

the oem shifter has a rubber bushing between the part that sticks inside the T50 and the one that lives in the cabin, so i guess the trans noises where normal and that was the oem solution

sooo aliexpress short shifter + aliexpress TRD knob + G4 trans oil + Xenum VXR Gear did the trick

TRD Short Shifter Rattle Noise, It's Normal?
I found an auction selling a spacer to allow a TRD shifter assembly to be mounted on top of the OEM retainer. The description (translated) is as follows:
Quote:This is an aluminium spacer to prevent chattering noise from TRD quick shift.
Assemble the quick shift using the normal retainer and spacer (image 3.4).

The chattering noise at high revolutions peculiar to TRD quick shift can be reduced.

In this picture you can see the assembly:

TRD retainer is about 1 cm higher than the OEM one, allowing a shorter throw. My suspicion is that either the cup and collar inside the TRD short shifter are brass or nylon and therefore rattle/chatter, or the retainer has some not-so-ideal clearances. Replacing the TRD retainer with an OEM retainer (plus spacer) would solve this issue.

If you need the spacer, you can find the auction here:

If the auction is gone, you could search for its title:

If you want to reduce the rattles, change to a much heavier shift knob. That will change the natural frequency that the lever assembly will gets excited at.

Yes, that can certainly help to change the frequency.
However, I already changed from a (lightweight) TRD knob to an OEM and even to a huge flower shift knob like this one:

It doesn't matter which one I use, all of them rattle. Confused

The flower knob is not nearly heavy enough to be effective. Tape weight to the shift lever or a roll of solder warped around the knob to see how much wt is needed to change the natural frequency. We are probably talking a large chrome shift knob to be able to add enough mass. Have you checked the transmission and engine mounts plus the attaching hardware. You can also try adding dense foam rubber inside the shifter boot.

I have checked the transmission and engine mounts and they are all in good nick and have no play in them.
I'm planning to install a C's short shifter anyway as I already have that in my possession. For science reasons I'll try to add more weight to see how much is necessary to stop it from rattling. Same goes for the foam.

+1 for C's shifter, it's great.

On the topic of rattles, has anyone fixed rattles in the handbrake lever? I get resonance in it at around 3000rpm.

I have conducted two experiments: I installed more mass to the flowerknob and then installed the "lightweight" TRD knob. In both cases, the rattle remained at around 5K rpm. In the case of the heavier, the rattle was more loud while the lighter was softer. This does make sense if you think of the shifter as a pendulum. I'm not increasing the shifter's length (that much) with the flowerknob, so the natural frequency remains the same.

The good news is that I also found out why the TRD short shifter was rattling:
[Image: AEU86 AE86 - TRD Short Shifter Rattle No...'s Normal?]
When I held my TRD short shifter in my hands, I could feel there was slight play in the vertical direction.
The TRD base plate doesn't feature a bushing, not even a copper one! It's actually metal only, which means the shifter itself is in direct contact with the retainer plate. You can see in the photo that there is pitting. I suspect that, even though enough grease was applied, the cup on the retainer plate wore down. When there is a slight play in the shifter assembly, the higher revs will make the shifter rattle. The rattle will then only make things worse as it will pit the cup even more.

My conclusion is that if you have a TRD short shifter that rattles, it's probably because of wear. It doesn't mean the TRD short shifter is broken, on the contrary: apart from the rattling noise it works just fine. I think a TRD short shifter that rattles can probably be fixed with a shim as this would remove the excess play.
