Anyone running 225' tires?
noise doesnt bother me much but are fat tires(on light cars) really that detrimental to traction in wet serfaces? I meen 225's on a 2300lb vehicle arent THAT big so that they have ahard time punching threw the rain are they? compared to 195 or 205 that is.. Ah well, I would keep keeping my current rims/tires for this winter driving anyway so that doesnt matter all that much for me either...
I'm still confused about how deeper tires would have such a negative effect on my cars braking/corner exiting performance. I can see the added unsprung/rotational weight would have a negative effect but I would figure the added contact to the road would cancel these out... After some browsing around I found that the 87+ Daytona Turbo Z came from the factory with 15x6.5 rims with 225/50-15 tires! And I am still finding many people who run that big of a tire on a 15x7 rim so I'm not to worried about that aspect.
Anywho, still asking around and for the most part I am getting the responce of and I quote "If it'll fit without rubbing, cram it in there." haha Still unsure how, other then unsprung rotational weight (which again I would imagine the added contact patch would MORE then make up for the added weight) that adding bigger tires would have any kind of negative effects to my vehicles performance. I meen, I have heard that bigger is not always better for all lightweight cars but I still dont see how. So basicly I'm still confused. Thanks for the quick replies btw. |

one thing i can say about 225. you will not get the tire warm enough in time for auto-x. it should get warm on a track after several laps. too much contact patch, too little weight to cause warming friction. i bought some 15x8.5 -30 wheels once, they came with 225 on them and they would just barely fit under the front fender. mind you i did flare the fender out like 20-30mm. but it was flush with no room to turn the wheel. oh yea and when i went to take the tire off the rim. it was pretty hard as the 225 kept wanting to expand on the 8.5 in rim. i cannot imagine fighting that much rubber on 7in rim. last thing. unless you have super negative offset wheels. the tires will rub your front shock housing.

I used Michelin Pilot sport SX 215/45-15 previously, and they are great on the hachi....no matter what people tell you. I used them for fast street, and 1 single trackday, and i could hardly get them to go sideways. I used them on a 7x15" wheel, Offset 15. They fit perfectly, on mine....offcourse i´m aware that no 2 hachi´s are the same, so they might scrape a bit on others, but i should be easily solved.

if you justwanna get quicker, try widening the track ot the car (find some low ET wheels, and lowering it. That will set the "bias" centre of gravity further down. but i dont thing there is a need to use 225 tyres for 130 hp.. 195 i thing should be okay.
i used to own a '89 civic 1.6 twincam, and i know it was quick stock, let alone w/ tune-up.. |

Sorry to bump a very old thread, but i searched and this seemed like a good topic to resurrect.
i have an 87 coupe with an sr20det. i'm waiting to get a cusco 1.5 lsd to send off to weir performance to have a rearend that can handle the motor. planned power output will be in the 240whp range (mustang dyno). i plan on doing trackdays with the car (wont be a dd), and was going to run 225/45/15's on an 15x8" wheel. i already have fender flares on the way. the car has ksport coilovers, and will be getting an assortment of suspension bits (t3 lateral links, godspeed swaybars). also has a welded in 6 point cage. anyone run a similar setup and have feedback? i was halfway debating running a 205 in the front (or even a 195) and 225 in the rear. |

15" is to small for that kind of power.
Switch to 16" or even 17" in the rear. I run 225/50-16 on 16x9 ET15 on my SR86 Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |

Front is 215/45/16 afair, duo to the steering lock for drift.
Also 16x9 ET15, but please ignore ET, since I am running pillow ball adjustable front and rear arms. Drifting - best fun you can have in your car with your pants on! |
