ahhh my headgasket!
Well after all the hard work of fixing the coolant leaks...... I went to change the oil and got chocolate milk.. DOH. The timing belt on the engine is about to go at any second..... so timing belt/headgasket. So much money that I don't have. Although I may get lucky... guy willing to trade for my 87 crx, in return I get his 91 Prelude (Wrecked in the front). I had a 88 Prelude I bought wrecked and its ez to fix the front end, chains...reverse..junkyard parts.
I'm consitering just doing a 4age swap now but the only prob is the price. It will cost more to do the 4age swap vs fixing the 4ac. I'm not craving power yet.. but it would be nice. If I did the 4age swap I would go with side draft carbs for sure because I have a SR5. Carbs=300-900 bucks 4age=250-600 exhaust fabrication=50-100. Gauges=100 misc=50-200 750-1500 I make about 650 every two weeks (im only 18 )... -200 insurance-50 for gas for the next two weeks= 400 every paycheck. |

Auch... Interesting choice you have to make. I think you need to reconsider in how much time you will need te power. If you think it will take another year you might want to swap the 4AC as a whole instead and save up bucks for the 4AG swap. Probably enough people throwing out their 4ACs nowadays and willing to sell them for a small price.

Id go straight for the 4A-G. Costs more in the short term yes, but since you are already planning to do it at some stage you are still gonna be spending that same money. Question is do you make it more expensive by fixing the 4A-C and then later on fitting the 4A-G ?

Decided to fix the 4AC. Me and some other old school corolla guys thought we'd pull the head off and check the pistons out for play. NO play at all.... bought a 22 dollar felpro headgasket... 20 dollar head job today (.040 cut) a few gaskets for the carb and fuel pump (Some moron used liquid gasket for almost the entire engine)
I really like the 4ac, its the underdog. Alot of people have said its a strong engine too.. and with the help of my rolla friends its a peice of cake to work on.... we had the head off intake manifold/exhaust/carb all of that in about 30 minutes. (My first time.. i did the work they told me what to do lol) |

Glad to hear it's nothing serious.. And if the 4AC is pleasing enough for you then I'd say stick with it. Just dont go all crazy on tuning those lumps when you do decide to switch to something faster.

My friend Julio is helping me out.... heres his ae86. His friend Jose is helping too, he has a 73 Corolla.
I just found Julio's car domain and I thought I'd share it. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/1889072/3 I'm going with the paradise racing step up kit. Cam/Carb/Valvesprings. Consitering the car has enough power to me already... I think it will be fun. Plus nobody else that I know of is doing this (Locally) |
