Greek AE86 restoration/modification (pics)
Gearbox found, and replaced. The new box feels and sounds OK so far. No noise when idleing, all gears slot nicely into place without hesitation, or strange noises. Synchros all work fine. Total cost: 360€.
I'm going to change the oil next Saturday to make shure nothing goes wrong (my new gearbox has been in a warehouse for God knows how long), and then it's track time to test it under real conditions. Also, I think I know why the rebuilt box was destroyed after 4000kms. The guy who rebuilt it (and mounted it) had not used the pris-direct bearing in the flywheel. The pris-direct is the main shaft that rotates with the clutch and transfers the power in the box. Its engine side end inside a bearingwhich ius placed in the flywheel to stabilize the rpis-direct and avoid excessive movement that can damage the box. The bearing had not been installed. |

That last one is now my new wallpaper Ivan! You can clearly see the bumps on the hood made by a hailstorm in 2003. Will have to be fixed someday
As of Tuesday I have stripped all the interior, except front seats and front carpet, door lining and main dash (top part and heating panel). I'm planning to fit a bucket seat and a steering wheel and then probably look to improve the suspension. But I'm in no hurry  |
