Why an 86?
For me, It is the History behind it. For the era of AE86, They are well known in the race world. JTCC, FIA Group A, Group N, Macau 1600 etc. AE86 is dominated all those races. Back in the days that I can purchase a AE86 for 800 USD in 1995, but now......................
Also, it is fun to drive because there is not much you can do about the suspension (rear suspension). These kind of characterics of the car make me needed to overcome using the driver's skill. Trust me, This car can teach you the skill you need for racing a rear wheel drive car. It is fun when you are racing in the track and make the newer car to yell the way because you and AE86 is faster Finally, The suspension tech is still 20 years old, so somehow in the future I may race in the other toyota rear wheel drive car. But now, Let my AE86 become my teacher to teach me how to drive him 110% in the track. It's so great to here someone in this country that is aware of the ae86's accomplishments outside of drifting or bodykits or cartoons. lol By any chance do you(or anyone else reading this) have a link or resource with more information about the ae86's racing past and accomplishments? I have searched and searched and searched and the only thing I can find is a few scattered mentions and word of mouth from other people(almost none of which being ae86 drivers/enthusiasts interestingly enough..). As for why I got an ae86.. well I needed something with a roof and backseats so that eliminated the miata and mr2's. ae86 popped up forsale and it was abit of a spur of the momment purchase. I like to think of it as a more practical Cosworth Escort rs1600 BDA. |

Why an 86?
I've been in love with the "AE86" corolla since I laid eyes on it. My neighbors had a AE82 (in USA we just refer to them as "old corollas") and I liked it for some reason. The first AE86 I remember seeing was when I was 11 years old, It had the amazing pop up headlights which I love so much in a car, it had style.. nice body lines and character. I like aloooot of cars.. and when ebay first came out (like 5 years or more) I searched for all of my fav cars. The 1984-87 Corolla became one that I searched. I remember a 1987 GT-S with power windows (Hatchback) sell for 1400US in very good condition. My dad paid for half of my first car so I had no judgement of what transmission type.. it had to be auto and 90+ Honda. I ended up settling for a 1989 Celica GT covertable. Then went a 1988 Prelude. Still wanting a AE86, not for drifting... but just for the style. The first drift videos come out.. I'm shocked... theres that little corolla making those tires cry for mercy! I get my first AE86 SR5, my friend says its got the "White Panda" paint job like Initial D, I asked him what it was... watched the video and it was only fuel to the AE86 fire. I also played Gran Turismo... bought it after fully building my CRX, then I fully tuned it and won a few races... it wasn't very fast or good at handling compared to other cars but it just had style.
