RedTop Engine?
I know it' has been so often discussed , but I'd like some more explanations!!!I 'm searching for a Redtop small ports engine .
I found a crashed Corolla for sale , but I'm not sure .
It's a AE92 FWD Corolla , year 1991, and I'v got an engine pic .
You can see it's a TVIS model . I guess it's a big port, but I'm not really sure .
What model should I look for to discover that rarity ?Celica Gti
Or late AE92.
That crashed car is located in France .
Any help welcome

That is big port engine.

from Phil Bradshaw's home page
Quote:Third Generation 4AGE 89.5-91.6
The next generation engines were introduced in May 1989 and remained in production until June 1991. Two types exist. The 16 valve has silver cam covers with red lettering only, and so are called red tops. These engines have oil cooled pistons, an external oil drain from the head to the sump (located behind #4 inlet and the ignition leads run underneath a cover between the cam covers.) Power is increased to 100 kW and all engines are MAP sensored. This is the final 16 valve variant produced. These engines have dispensed with TVIS and feature smaller inlet ports.
I have a small port engine, but it´s a with AFM.

here is pic from small port: http://www.japanmoottorituonti.fi/pics/4age16v.jpg

Smallport is only delivered in late AE92 GTi. No TVIS of course and most are AFM (In Europe anyway) combined with that fugly EGR-valve.

Oh and btw you say that crashed car is from 1991 ? If so then it should have smallport because smallport was introduced somewhere 1989/1990 up untill 04-1992. But it's not a smallport whehehe Big Grin Weird.

RedTop Engine?
After further questions , the owner admitted that it was a late 1988 model.........That's why it's a big port.
I do know now what I'll have to check to find a small port .
Thanks

This is definetly a bigport.

Check http://www.ebay.co.uk I just bought a MAPped smallport there and I think there were a few other pieces too. You have to be lucky though to find one because they are really rare. I think you can find also the MAP version in UK easier than anywhere else.

matto,

Not 100% sure about this one myself but I believe the smallport engine came with the newer 7rib block which is stronger then the older 3rib block and can handle more power and it had some better lubrication due to some oil thingies they added to it. Don't know what to call em.
Also the head itself is a small port which flows the air better then the big port which means better power at lower RPM but theoretically less power at higher RPM so they claim its slightly less rev happy and because the internals are heavier (stronger) it has slightly slower throttle response.

So basically, stronger engine, more torque and power at lower RPM and over the rest of the power band, but slightly less revvy and slower throttle responce.

There is a good writeup on club4ag about the differences between the 4AG engines btw:
