I dunno Jamie, A CA18DET in good condition goes between 500 and 800 Euro's here. Thats engines that have just had new bearings etc. For that money you get an engine that is good up to 300RWHP, a turbo, all manifolds, an ECU that comes with plug and play upgrades - mappings, depending on your setup (no expensive tuning), Intercooler and a tranny that is good up to 400+hp.
Sorry, but no 4A-GE will ever come close for the same price.
Manifold? At least 150-200E for a cheap chinese one, and you have to pray that it doesn't self destruct.
Turbo? Again 150E for a decent T25
MegaSquirt? 160E, do you have to add money for the 2 bar mapsensor?
Intercooler? 50-100E used
And don't forget the tuning...not everyone can do it themselves, so theres another 250E for wideband use etc.
All in all, you've spent between 550 and 800E, right smack in the middle of CA18DET territory, and what does it give you? No bullitproof engine, tranny that is a timebomb, High compression and associated sensitivity to knock and a 30hp deficit compared to a CA at the same boost.

Don't get me wrong, I like the whole home tinker aspect of turboing a 4A-GE. But with CA18DET prices being what they are, it makes less financial sense. Same price for either an engine strung out to its max, or an engine that is just starting to stretch its legs.

No way to get complete CA18DET setup for 500E here - even minus the tranny. For such amount of money I will get CA18DET bare engine ready for... rebuild. Maybe this explains the difference in thinking Big Grin
PS: This explains also some CA20DET hybrid engines here - just matter of money.

to be honest i think if He sells the 4age in the car and people can see it running he would easily make 400-800 euro's just for the engine. (wich is cheap :-) if you let it go for that give me a call and I will come rip it out myselve :-)

THan he has money for his transplant.

Though if you start drifting hard with it I know that TE71corolla broke a couple sets of halfshafts in the rearend so it might be wise to start looking for a hiace rearend.

axles break due abuse, NOT due power Tongue

I'm sure i can break my rear axles, with only 52 RWHP and keep them in one piece with 300 bhp.

Hey Menti

Just stick CA18DET inside, clean the breather pipe and hit the road. Thumbs up!

Wow there are some people very hardcore about the 4age, i must defend timon on this one, as doing this swap myself it was , easier than changing oil, it was almost 90% complete bolt right in, a few minor mods, but bang for buck, ca18 all the way, i had mine beat the hell out of it, never a rear end problem trans problem motor problem nothing, just great power and the motor was stock!!, now i drove timons and many other 4age's and u hit the gas and it does nothing, i know you can put in alot of money and get a nicer little higher powered one , but why go through all the hard work to pull power out of a smaller engine, that, will just rob your pocket and get its ass kicked by many other cars, i think the corolla is an EXCELENT chasis, just needs more power, and a very simple way is a 20 kilo heavier nissan motor. just my opinion, but some people are dedicated to keeping a 4age in the car no matter cost, so i respect that. but for me im al about power response and reliability, and one thing i hate is how WEAK the ae86 trans is i was always changing friends trans out always 2nd gear just shattered, anywho good luck timon and let me know wtiha nything ill help you make it happen!
