Cylinder Head Work
Bit of a newbie type question but I've searched and can't find a solid answer! So:

I need to change my head gasket (brown water + brown gunk under the oil filler cap = not right). Seems like a good oppertunity to do some upgrading. Few questions though -

I've read that a small port non-TVIS head is the one to have if you want to start messing with it. Is it possible to use a small port head with TVIS?

Is there anywhere where I can get an exchange head from? The one on the car is a big port (original to the three-rib block engine, oval inlet ports)

If I were to put in a pair of cams at the same time, what should I look for? Can't seem to find an HKS dealer with some in stock, anyone have expierence with Kent or Piper?

Cheers all!

You cant use TVIS with a smallport head...port shapes are totally different as the nicknames already suggest. The smallport heads are found in 90-92 corolla gt-i's (gt-s in the US), and in a certain general motors car too I think..
If you find such an engine, it's best to just swap the whole thing, since the rest of those engine's are better for performance as well.

I now realise that, sorry for the dumb question!

So if I were to put a smallport head/engine in my car, could I use the TVIS inlet manifold without the butterfly plate? As otherwise the air intake would be facing the bulkhead, rather than the front of the car....

I dont know if you can do that. But, one comon thing is to modify the non tvis inlet manyfold. Cut the 2 tops, and weld them the other way around, plus, the ports are matched with the smallport head.

The answer is no again. Port shapes are completely different, one will never fit the other.

It will fit without the butterfly plates, but it will ruin the airflow into the inlet ports.. Welding the smallport manifold is a better idea. But dont get ahead of yourself...first find yourself an engine, then start thinking about modding it.

Just swap the blocks. Use the bigport head, manifold, TVIS etc on the
smallport block. Plug up the oil return hole in the block and you have
an easy conversion with no electric wiring problems Smile

If you want to use the smallport head and manifold at a later date, you
have plenty of time to cut and weld the manifold. You will also need to
modify the wiring loom, which can be quite a big job if you are planning
to use the smallport ECU and injectors.

Thats what I think I'll do...rather than rushing out and buying a load of bits for my current engine, I'll find a running smallport engine in a car before thinking about what I can do to it.

So I just need to change the head gasket in my car for now then!

Thanks for all your help guys.
