Ehm..I havent ever seen one in real life, but plenty on pictures.
It uses a bypass line from the cooling system which somehow operates the middle of the grille to open. Dont know if it's mechanical or electrical, but I could get a seized one at a very low price a while ago.
I think it just opens at temps where the thermostat is opened, but maybe it has a thermostat of it's own.

need them for their project but might be able to help yoy.
