High engine oil temps - oil cooler discussion
My engine oil temp is very high when drifting, it can go up to ~140C and even though I use 10W-60 oil, it's not good for the bearings.
I have the stock oil cooler but I don't know if it is connected correctly on the sandwich plate. I'm curious if the stock oil cooler has inlet and outlet ports or both are basically the same. The sandwich plate has the inlet and outlet port but I don't know which one is which one. Does anyone have any experiences with using double stock oil cooler - I mean connected them to each other? Does this conversion make any difference in the oil temps? Aftermarket oil coolers with thermostat type sandwich plates are surely the best decision to cool down the oil but also the most expensive, that's why I'm asking this. 1987 Toyota Corolla GT coupe - for holidays oversteer 2005 Toyota Corolla - for daily understeer |

Hey Sutter,
common problem I have even got it around the same temps with "normal" circuit driving. A standard oil cooler goes from the sump to the oil filter plate to the sumppan. I will either buy a new oil cooler or buidl a double setup. That should improve it alot. I'm using double OEM coolers, and it sure helps...but is there a right "pattern" how to install the oil hoses to the cooler plate?

If you use an adapter plate there is no diffrence. (it just get routed from and 2 the engine. The switchplate ends in an open chamber.

Hi guys
I also run a double original setup with a thermostat switching from one to both. 2 will increase cooling capacity quite a bit and without a thermostat it takes some time to warm up the oil. I do not have an oil temp anymore but when I had one the temps were always stable around 100-110°C Was never on track though with the temp readouts though. My personal opinion is though that an aftermarket oilcooler would be the better choice if you can spend the money. This is just from what I have heard though and not from my own experience. And a plus is that you can get a oilfilter relocation kit with it which makes filter changes much easier. If pics are needed of the double setup, let me know.
