HELP 7age problem no start!!!
I read post HERO.....
We get block 7age and 4age head....now engine in the car....but we have problem with adjusting cams. We have belt from Porsche. I try few set but engine cranking how dont have spark plugs. Please tell me how I must set cams when I have TDC on crank. Thx a lot |

HELP 7age problem no start!!!
I have no idea how the 7age guys adjust their cams, and I havent seen hero round here for a while. What I would do is to set the campulleys to the approximate position they need to be in (you can find this in the manual, which you can download from the aeu86.org homepage). Then grab an old 4age timing belt that still has the indication stripes on the back, and count the number of teeth between the 2 stripes that are nearest to eachother. Then draw 2 lines on the porsche belt with the exact same number of teeth between them and use these to properly adjust the campulleys.
After that it's a matter of setting the crank to TDC, keeping the campulleys in the right place and installing the belt (making sure it's tight on the side without the tensioner). Now when you fasten the tensioner, look if everything is where it's supposed to be, and draw a line on the back of the timing belt at the adjustment mark on the crank pulley. Finally, make a note of the distances (nr of teeth) between the lines you drew, and post it in a 7AGE thread here so future generations will benefit from your work Hope that helped, if anyone knows a simpler method that will make me look stupid, please share. Setting the cam timing on a 7AGE should be the same as when
the head is installed on a 4AGE. The only difference is that the belt has a few extra teeth. However, if you have had everything apart, you should check the following list: 1. Are the cam wheels fitted to the camshafts correctly ?? When the dimple on the rim of the cam wheel is at the top, the knock pin on the inlet cam is in the top slot, and the knock pin on the exhaust cam is in the bottom slot. 2. Install the cams with the dimples on the cam wheels at the top. The dimples should line up in the centre of the twin raised marks pressed into the steel plate behind the cam wheels. 3. Set the crankshaft to TDC on number one cylinder. The notch on the crank pulley should align with the zero degrees mark on the bottom timing belt cover. 4. Fit and tension the timing belt. Check that all the marks are still in the correct places. 5. Remove and reinstall the distributor according to the manual. Check that the rotor arm is pointing at the post for the number one cylinder spark plug. Have you checked your grounds or your ignitor ground? The 4AGE is very sensitive to grounds that are not good.
