A smaller diameter ring gear is another problem as it makes the teeth on the gear smaller and more prone to failure. But it's a different problem then snapping axles (which also happens). Snapping axles is purely a question of torque (engine tq,ratio and tire grip) and shock loading. I think the transition from sliding to grip like you have with drifting and rallying is a big contributor.

A wheel to steer the front of the car
