There is a town near Fuji called Gotemba its a 2 hour bus drive from Shunjuku station Tokyo.

Its close, but I guess you will need to look at renting a car to get about. Food in Japan is cheap I was able to get around with about 20 euro's a day on food. Depending on your stay you can manage for around 60 euro.

Make sure to do an effort on Japanese they appreciate it. ( i used a loney planet book)

Alan and Miguel live in japan and both own (well Miguel did I think he does now again)

You could try PM them. But remember they have a life outside the forum and most of them have families too.
