This method is flawed and inaccurate in my opnion as you have to take the average of both sides of the cam nose.

The method i use is to measure the lift at TDC. Set the engine to TDC, and set the intake and exhaust cams to the value they should be reading at TDC. This is more accurate because there is no space for error as you are measuring the flank of the cam lobe. The only thing you have to make sure of is that you are at the true TDC.

Use a DTI to measure lift on the bucket, and make sure you are measuring at the same included angle of the valve so you dont induce a lift ratio.

When i time in a cam i ignore the marking on the pulleys, they mean nothing, i only reply on the lift figures.
I think i´ll leave the actual cam timing to a pro shop with a dyno. I was just curious to hear if i could go all wrong on timing and lift by installing at Zero degree setting on the camgear, and then adjusting the timing afterwards.
But very interesting reading there BenR....all new stuff to me. Cool
